The Patriots are hoping for more offense after struggling through a 7-6 home win in their preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints as a -4 point home favorite. The total went well under the closing line of 37 ½ points.
Tom Brady in limited duty completed 4 of 7 passes for 30 yards. Backup Brian Hoyer in relief hit on 8 of 15 passes for just 45 yards and a touchdown. It was a poor showing for second year signal caller Ryan Mallett out of Arkansas as he hit on just 8 of 19 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Shane Vereen led the Patriots in rushing with 64 yards on 11 carries. Stevan Ridley ran for 40 yards on eight rushes. Julian Edelman led New England with four receptions for 36 yards.
The Patriots defense allowed New Orleans no touchdowns with 280 yards of offense.
