The Louisiana Derby will go off as the 10th race on the Fairgrounds horse racing program on Sunday. There is a $1 million dollar purse for this Kentucky Derby prep race with the winner assured of enough graded earnings to make the field on the first Saturday in May.
The couple entry of Mr. Bowling and Mark Valeski has been listed as the 2-1 favorite on the morning line. Each horse is trained by Larry Jones. Mark Valeski is coming off a second place finish at the Risen Star Stakes held over Fairgrounds on February 25th. He has two victories in four lifetime races and Anna Napravnik is in the irons. Mr. Bowling finished 11th at the Risen Star Stakes and has three lifetime wins in his six lifetime starts. Robby Albarado will ride Mr. Bowling.
Second on the morning line is the #7 horse Cigar Street with 7-2 odds. Stephen Margolis trains and Shaun Bridgmohan will ride the son of Street Sense. This will only be Cigar Street’s third lifetime start. After a fifth place finish in his first career start Cigar Street broke his Maiden at Fairgrounds in a 1 1/16th race ran back on March 10th beating his competition by over 13 ½ lengths.
