These teams last battled in the 2007 season in Tennessee with the Titans posting the 13-9 victory as a 7 point favorite.
The Raiders showed the door to inept starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell and traded for former Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell.
The 6 year pro from Auburn completed on 64.5% of his passes for 3618 yards 20 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. The knock on Campbell in recent seasons is his inability to get the ball downfield enough as he would often settle for the dump off passes on third downs. Campbell suffered a neck stinger in preseason and is expected to start on Sunday.
The Raiders are hoping for more production from former first round draft pick running back Darren McFadden. The three year back had a poor 2009 season with only a 3.4 yards a carry average on 104 carries.
Michael Bush had a good season with a 4.8 yards per rush average on 123 carries and three touchdowns.
The Raiders will line up wide with 2009 1st round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy with leading pass catcher Zach Miller at tight end. Heyward-Bey had a horrible rookie season with just 9 catches for 40 yards. Louis Murphy was second on the club with 34 receptions and 521 yards with 4 touchdowns.
The Raiders offense has nowhere to go but up as the team was atrocious ranking 31st in the league in yardage and in scoring.
Defensively the team was 26th in the league allowing 361 yards per game. Oakland will need to be good against the run on Sunday and the team finished a poor 29th against the run allowing over 155 yards rushing per game.
The team is hoping that first round pick linebacker Rolando McClain and second round pick defensive tackle Lamarr Houston out of Texas can help out in run defense.
Tennessee began the 2009 year 0-6 and rallied to win 8 of their last 10 regular season games to finish at 8-8 and miss the playoffs.
Vince Young replaced veteran Kerry Collins under center following the teams 6th consecutive loss and rallied the team.
Young completed 58.7% of his passes in 2009 for 1879 yards 10 touchdowns and 7 picks. He is a threat to run and pulled off a nice 5.1 yards per carry average with 2 touchdowns.
On the ground the team is led by pro bowler Chris Johnson. The third year back had 2006 yards rushing on 358 carries for a 5.6 yards a carry average and 14 touchdowns. Javon Ringer will back up Johnson this season as LenDale White was sent to Seattle. Ringer had just 8 carries in 2009 for 48 yards.
Tennessee is not strong out wide. With Vince Young battling accuracy issues its very hard to sign free agent wide receivers. The team lines up Nate Washington and Justin Gage out wide. They combined for just 75 catches and 9 touchdowns in 2009. Tight end Bo Scaife was fourth in the team in receptions with 45 for 440 yards and only 1 touchdown.
Defensively the club allowed 365 yards per game ranking 28th in the NFL in 2009. The Titans were extremely poor against the pass allowing 258 yards per game and ranking 31st and second to last in the league.
It will be a new look for Tennessee’s defensive corps as longtime pass rusher Kyle Vanden Bosch and second leading tackler linebacker Keith Bulluck were lost in free agency.
