The teams met last year in New York and it was the Carolina Panthers posting a 41-9 blowout victory as an 8 ½ point underdog. Carolina opened up a 31-0 lead and never looked back.
Carolina posted 416 yards with 247 yards coming on the ground.
With Jake Delhomme released in the off season it will be Matt Moore under center for the Panthers. Moore got the start in last years game and the quarterback hit on 15 of 20 passes for 171 yards three touchdowns and no picks.
The four year veteran QB last season completed 61.6% of his passes for 1053 yards 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. With Carolina’s good running game Moore just needs to minimize his mistakes with good in game decisions.
On the ground the Panthers are led by a two headed attack behind Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. They combined for over 2200 yards and a outstanding 5.1 yards per carry average with 17 touchdowns. The Panthers had the #3 rushing attack with 156 yards rushing per game.
Steve Smith led the Panthers receivers with 65 catches for 982 yards and a very good 15.1 yards per catch average and 7 touchdowns. The Panthers are paper thin with rookie Brandon LaFell and Dwayne Jarrett competing for the other starting job.
Defensively the Panthers were very good defending the pass allowing just 191 yards passing a game ranking 4th in the league. With 22 interceptions Carolina ranked 5th in the NFL.
The Giants are hoping for a good start to the 2010 season to help erase some bad memories of an awful 2009 season that saw the club drop 8 of their last 11 games.
Eli Manning is back under center following a season where he completed 62.3% of his passes for 4021 yards 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The Giants really need to get their running game back on track. The team dropped big time in run offense as the team averaged 114 yards rushing per game ranking 17th in the league. Brandon Jacobs averaged just 3.7 yards per rush on 224 carries after a 2007 and 2008 season that saw the ball carrier average 5.0 yards per rush.
Ahmad Bradshaw had a good season with a 4.8 yards per carry average on 163 carries and 7 touchdowns.
Wide receiver Steve Smith had a solid year with 107 catches and 7 touchdowns. Second year pro Hakeem Nicks had 47 catches in his rookie year with a very good 16.8 yards per catch average and 6 touchdowns. The number three wide out Mario Manningham produced 57 catches for a solid 14.4 yards per reception average.
The New York Giants defense was atrocious last season. The team sat 30th in scoring defense allowing nearly 27 points per game. The team tanked down the stretch allowing 41 or more points to three of their last four opponents. The Giants once dominant pass rush decreased their sack total to 32 in 2009 to rank 18th in the NFL.
