The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles will hit the highway to open up the college football season in 2010 with a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks from the SEC Conference on Thursday night.

South Carolina was solid on the defensive side of the ball in 2009 by allowing 20 points and 301 yards per game. They were good against the run as opposing running backs averaged just 3.7 yards per rush against them.
South Carolina opened the season strong on the defensive side of the ball with a 7-3 road victory against North Carolina St.
Southern Mississippi will return only 4 players on offense and 9 on the defensive side of the ball in 2010. The club finished 7-6 last season and lost to Middle Tennessee St 42-32 in their bowl game.
This is a tough spot for Southern Mississippi a they begin their new season on the road at a good defensive SEC school and with only 1 returning offensive lineman from 2009.
Junior quarterback Austin Davis Jr. returns as the clubs starter. He was the teams 2009 starter before suffering a foot injury in week 5. Prior to his injury Davis Jr. completed 69.2% of his passes for 1165 yards 10 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions.
The Golden Eagles top receiver returns as junior wide out DeAndre Brown Jr. had 47 catches for an impressive 16.7 yards per reception average and 9 touchdowns.
Their running game will have to revamp as the team loses their top two backs from 2009 that combined for over 1700 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns and for over 5 yards a carry.
Defensively the Golden Eagles allowed 26 points per game to their opponent with a 393 yards per game against average in 2009. Their weakness was the pass as opposing quarterbacks passed for 261 yards per game against them.
