Buffalo enters their preseason with a lot of question marks at the quarterback position. Trent Edwards is listed as the clubs starter entering the season. In an injury plagued 2009 Edwards could only complete 60.1% of his passes for 1169 yards 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. For his Buffalo career he has completed only 61.3% of his passes with 24 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
Backing up Edwards as the #2 quarterback is journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. The 5 year pro has performed poorly and its simply mind boggling that he can be this high on an NFL roster. Fitzpatrick is a career 55.9% passer with 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Also on the roster is third year pro Brian Brohm and rookie Levi Brown from Troy who will compete for a job as the third string. In limited duty in 2009 Brohm completed 17 of 29 for 146 yards 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Originally drafted by Green Bay Brohm has looked terrible when inserted during the preseason.
First round pick C.J. Spiller was finally signed by the team and missed over a week of camp. He will compete with Fred Taylor for the first string back position. Spiller is also a big play man in the return game.
Marshawn Lynch figures to see some action in week 1. Lynch is coming off a poor 2009 where he could only average 3.8 yards a carry. Bills will look at former Indianapolis Colt Chad Simpson in the backfield. Simpson averaged 7.3 yards per carry last year on only 15 carries. In 2008 he had 45 yards on just 15 carries.
James Hardy and Lee Evans make up the starting wide outs for the club and they should see limited action on Friday. Their backups are Chad Jackson and Steve Johnson. Jackson is a four year veteran with only 18 career catches. Third year man Steve Johnson in two seasons with the Bills caught just 12 balls for a 7 yards per catch average and two touchdowns. Rookies Marus Easley from Connecticut and Donald Jones from Youngstown State will get looks.
The Redskins made noise in the off season by acquiring veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb in the off season. The 12 year veteran is coming off a season where he completed 60.3% of his passes with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. With all the receiving talent surrounding him the Eagles would have liked to see McNabb be a bit more accurate.
Eight year veteran Rex Grossman is the number two quarterback. Grossman led the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl appearance a few years back. His is only a career 54% passer with 33 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
Battling for the #3 position on the team is four year veteran John Beck and three year veteran Richard Bartel. Beck has 4 career starts coming in the 2007 season with the Miami Dolphins and completed just 56.1% of his passes for 559 yards 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. In the preseason with the Baltimore Ravens last season Beck hit on 22 of 38 passes for 340 yards two touchdowns and 0 interceptions. Bartel played in three preseason games with the Redskins in 2009 and completed 15 of 18 passes for 177 yards no touchdowns and interceptions.
Washington resembles the old George Allen Redskins with their old age at the running back position. Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker will compete for carries. The youth on the roster will vie for roster spots include Ryan Torain, Darrel Young and rookies Maurice Greer from Troy and Keiland Williams from LSU.
Donovan McNabb’s receiving weapons included veterans Joey Galloway, Santana Moss and Malcolm Kelly. The Redskins are hoping for a breakout season for the third year 6’4” Kelley. Competing for roster spots include the veteran Bobby Wade with rookies Terrence Austin from UCLA, Brandon Banks from Kansas St and Shay Hodge from Ole Miss.
