Cincinnati concluded play in the 2009 regular season with a 10-6 record and champions of the AFC North division.

The Bengals hosted the New York Jets in the AFC Wildcard playoffs and lost 24-14 at home with their opponent starting a rookie quarterback making his playoff debut on the road.

The team sputtered down the stretch losing three of their four last games.

Cincinnati was led by a good defense in 2009 as the club finished 4th in the league in total defense allowing just 301.4 yards per game. They were a top 7 defense against the run and pass last season.

The team will need to be better in the passing game as the club ranked 26th in the league at 180.6 yards through the air per game.

Carson Palmer passed for 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season. Since losing wide out Chris Henry to season injury Palmers passing touchdowns went south along with their passing game.

To help out the team added tight end Jermaine Gresham via the draft in the first round out of Oklahoma. He is a big target at 6’5” and 265 pounds. Wide receiver Antonio Bryant comes over from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

Cincinnati had success running the football last season behind Cedric Benson who rushed for 1251 yards and 6 touchdowns with a 4.2 yards per carry average.

2010 Cincinnati Bengals Regular Season Schedule:

The squad plays in the AFC North and that will bring a game at home and away against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. Cincinnati went 6-0 versus the division last season.

The AFC North will play against the AFC East and NFC South during the 2010 regular season.

The Bengals will play AFC East clubs Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills at home with road games at the New York Jets and New England Patriots.

Cincinnati’s games against the NFC South will be home games to the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers with road games against the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons.

With Cincinnati’s first place finish in the AFC North last season the club must play the two other first place teams from the AFC so the team is scheduled to play the San Diego Chargers at home and the New England Patriots on the road.

The Bengals close with a tough schedule.

In week 12 the team has a road game at the New York Jets on a short week and then must host New Orleans in week 13. In week 14 the team travels to Pittsburgh. They host Cleveland in week 15 before hosting San Diego and closing the season at Baltimore.

Cincinnati will be featured in three prime time games in 2010.

The club will host Pittsburgh and San Diego on Sunday night football and travel to the New York Jets on a special edition Thanksgiving night game on NFL Network.

Offense:

Carson Palmer had just 1 game where he passed for over 300 yards and it came against the woeful Kansas City Chiefs secondary. His completion percentage fell to 60.5% as the teams passing game suffered greatly with the season ending injury and death of Chris Henry. Team’s were able to focus on Ochocinco and the Bengals receivers did not step up. Palmer had an elbow injury in 2008 that sidelined him for 12 games and some speculate that he his arm strength suffered last season just 1 year off the injury.

The Bengals had an outstanding running game led by 6 year veteran Cedric Benson. The running back produced 1251 yards last season on 301 carries and 6 touchdowns for a 4.2 yards per carry average.

Bernard Scott backs up Benson and the 2nd year back produced 4.3 yards a carry on 74 attempts. Brian Leonard is a hard working back that contributed well in the passing game in third down situations with a 7.2 yards per catch average.

The Bengals will line up in the receiver position with Chad Ochocinco and Antonio Bryant as the #1 and #2 options. Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson are the #3 and #4 options with 3rd round pick from Texas Jordan Shipley providing depth.

Ochocinco had 72 catches a year ago with a pretty good 14.5 yards per catch average and 9 touchdowns. His production could be even better with Bryant coming in.

Eight year veteran Antonio Bryant played in an awful offense in Tampa Bay with a struggling inaccurate first year quarterback. He produced 39 receptions and 4 touchdowns for a 15.4 yards per catch average in 2009. He is a deep threat for the Bengals which will greatly aid offensive production. Caldwell is a good option when the team goes with three receivers as he is most effective in the slot and moving the chains in 3rd downs and a red zone option. 1st round pick tight end Jermaine Gresham is a pass catcher who will need to develop run blocking skills.

The offensive line shapes up with Kyle Cook at the center with Nate Livings and Bobbie Williams at the guards with Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smitht at the tackles. Cincinnati allowed 29 sacks a year ago and the unit did a very good job of opening up holes in the clubs running attack.

Defense:

Cincinnati’s 4-3 defense will shape up with Domata Peko and Tank Johnson on the inside with Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom out wide. The club produced 34 sacks in 2009 sitting in the middle of the league. Odom jumped out with 8 sacks in his first 6 games but missed the rest of the season after tearing his Achilles heel. Florida defensive end Carlos Dunlap was drafted in the second round to provide depth at the position.

The linebackers will feature Dhani Jones the veteran in the middle with the youth on the outside in Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga. The 11 year veteran Jones had 113 tackles a season ago as the club really upgraded his position through the draft the past few seasons.

The Bengals secondary will line up with Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall at the corners with Roy Williams and Chris Crocker at the safety positions. Drafted was corner Brandon Ghee out of Wake Forest in the third round to add depth.

With 19 interceptions a season ago Cincinnati ranked 9th in the league. This is another area the Bengals have built up well from their recent drafts as both corners are former first round acquisitions and are solid in coverage.

And now to my Selection:

Cincinnati addressed a major need to add a complimentary receiver for Ochocinco to fire up the passing game and Antonio Bryant will fill those shoes very well. The defense has gotten much better over the seasons with outstanding performances through the draft.

Cincinnati swept through AFC North opposition last season. Baltimore has greatly improved and Pittsburgh declined due to two key injuries on the defensive side of the football last season.

The Bengals have a first place schedule and a very difficult one in that. With the AFC North on the improve with better health and personnel the Bengals wont get to 8 wins this season against a extremely difficult schedule.

Selection: Play Under 8 wins in 2010 Regular Season.
