Trends Matchups Picks Injuries Odds NFL College Football ScoresPublished: July 20, 2010
It was another poor season for the Buffalo Bills as they finished off the 2009 regular season with a 6-10 record. Can you believe it has now been 10 seasons since the Bills last made the playoffs.
A coaching change was made in Buffalo and Chan Gailey inherits a questionable roster heading into a new season.
The team struggled mightily on the offensive side of the football. They were 30th in the league in passing averaging just 157.2 yards per game. The team was 28th in scoring with a 16.1 points per game average.
The Bills were very quiet early during the free agent period adding very little to their offensive side of the football.
Heading into training camp it appears the club is still committing to Trent Edwards under center. Edwards suffered through an injury riddled season and saw only 7 starts in 2009. He passed for only 6 touchdowns and threw 7 interceptions.
Cast off Ryan Fitzpatrick saw time under center for the Bills and finished the year with 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Brian Brohm was acquired via trade and saw limited action in 2009 with the Bills and threw 0 touchdown passes with 2 interceptions.
The Bills running game was upgraded in the draft as the team selected C.J. Spiller out of Clemson as their number one pick.
On the defensive side of the football the Bills finished second against the pass by allowing just 184.3 yards per game. With 28 interceptions they were second in the league in 2009.

2010 Buffalo Bills Regular Season Schedule:
As the Buffalo Bills play in the AFC East they will play home and away against the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.
The Bills division AFC East will compete in 2010 against the AFC North and NFC North.
Buffalo’s AFC North opponents will be the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns at home with road games to the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.
From the NFC North the Bills will host the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions with road games against the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.
Buffalo was in last place in the 2009 season so they will play against the two other last place squads in the AFC and that brings a home game to the Jacksonville Jaguars and a road game at the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Bills will play no prime time high profile games in 2010 and will play every game this season at 1PM Eastern Time on Sundays.
The team will play a home game in 2010 in Toronto against the Chicago Bears.
Buffalo’s ownership finally got it right for their home game in Toronto.
Last season they scheduled a divisional rival New York Jets in Toronto. The games in Toronto provide no home field advantage for Buffalo as the games have more of a neutral field feel to it.
Offense:
The 2010 season should be a make or break year for starting quarterback Trent Edwards. He enters training camp as the #1 starter following a 2009 season where he missed 8 games during the season while battling the effects of a concussion. He completed 60.1% of his passes and have 7 interceptions and only 6 touchdowns passes with a passer rating of 73.8. The Bills were very quiet in free agency and drafted a quarterback #7 in the draft by selection Levi Brown out of Troy.
The club went with running back C.J. Spiller out of Clemons with their first round draft pick. He is also a threat in the kick off return game. Four year pro Fred Jackson rushed for 1062 yards and had an impressive 4.5 yards per carry average.
Marshawn Lynch has battle consistency issues throughout his three year career. He finished 2009 with just a 3.8 yards per carry average on 120 carries. He missed the clubs first three games last year with suspension from the league.
Trent Edwards weapons in the passing game shape up with Lee Evans and James Hardy as the #1 and #2 with Roscoe Parrish and Chad Jackson the #3 and #4. Terrell Owens and Josh Reed were not resigned by the club. Lee Evans had 44 catches last season for a 13.9 yards a catch average and 7 touchdowns. Third year pro James Hardy had just 1 catch in 2009 and Roscoe Parrish just three. Marcus Easley was drafted in the fourth round to provide some depth out of Connecticut. The Bills have paper thin at this position.
Derek Schouman is the tight end for the Bills who contributed in 2009 with just 3 catches. The team finished 30th in the league in passing with 157.2 yards per game and the outlook is just as bad for 2010.
The offensive line shapes up with Geoff Hangartner at center with Eric Wood and Andy Levitre at guards with Deetrius Bell and Cornell Green at the tackle position. The line allowed a high 46 quarterback sacks last season finishing 28th in the league. Green comes in free agency from the Oakland Raiders.

Defense:
The team will go to a 3-4 defense in 2010 with Kyle Williams at nose tackle with veteran Marcus Stroud and Dwan Edwards at tackle. The Bills finished 30th in the league against the run in 2009 allowing 156.3 rushing yards per game as the team was exploited up the middle due to injuries. Second round pick Torrell Troup defensive tackle for Central Florida and defensive end Alex Carrington from Arkansas State drafted in the third round provide mush needed depth for the club.
The linebackers feature Kawika Mitchell and Paul Posluszny in the middle with Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel on the outside. Schobel led the team with 10 sacks in 2010. Four year pro Paul Posluszny had a team high 110 tackles a season ago and is solid on the inside for the club. The Bills went 1-3 with Posluszny was out of the lineup injured in weeks 2 through 5.
The bright spot for Buffalo sits in their secondary with Terrence McGee and Leodis McKelvin at corners with Bryan Scott and Jairus Byrd at the safety position. The Bills finished 2nd in the NFL last season with 28 interceptions. Byrd had 9 picks in his rookie season in 2009.
And now to my Selection:
The AFC East opponents for the Bills are improving clubs in the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. The Bills are going in the opposite direction and will have trouble getting a win in 6 games against these clubs. Trent Edwards doesn’t have much help in the receiver position and I don’t see the team improving much on the offense side of the ball. The Bills defense will be on the field way to long and the club will not get to 6 wins this season.
Selection: Play Under 5 ½ wins in 2010 Regular Season.
