New York Jets NFL Pro Football 2010 Regular Season Win Betting Odds Projection

Published on July 19, 2010 by   ·   No Comments

The New York Jets behind a rookie quarterback finished the 2009 regular season with a 9-7 record and qualified for the post season as a wild card entrant.

The Jets closed the season strongly winning 7 of their last 9 games including the post season.

The team behind rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez won two straight road playoff games. They defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 24-14 in the AFC Wildcard playoffs and then a week later pulled off a major upset victory by winning at the San Diego Chargers 17-14 in the AFC Divisional round playoffs.

The Jets then ran into Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts and fell 30-17 in the AFC Championship game.

The Jets were led in 2009 behind an outstanding defense that ranked 1st in the NFL in total defense by allowing just 252.3 yards a game. The club was first against the pass allowing only 153.7 yards through the air.

Offensively behind a stout offensive line the Jets were first in the league running the football behind a 172.3 yards per game rushing attack. The club struggled through the air in stretches behind the growing pains of a rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets finished 31st in the league throwing the football behind only 148.8 yards passing per game.

Key components to their run attack will be missing in 2010 with running backs Leon Washington and Thomas Jones lost in free agency along with starting guard Alan Faneca. The Jets are banking behind an aging LaDainian Tomlinson to back up at running back.

2010 New York Jets Regular Season Schedule:

The Jets compete in the AFC East division so they must play home and away against the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.

The Jets division AFC East will play against the AFC North and NFC North in the 2010 regular season.

The New York Jets AFC North opponents will feature home games against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals with road games at the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns.

From the NFC North the Jets will compete at home against the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers with road trips to the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

With the Jets second place finish in the AFC East they are scheduled against the two other second place teams from the AFC and that will bring a home game to the Houston Texans and a road trip to the Denver Broncos.

The Jets are scheduled in many prime time high profile games in 2010. They are featured on Monday Night Football on three occasions with home games against Baltimore and Minnesota and a road trip to New England.

The Jets must hit the highway on Sunday night football with a game at division rival Miami Dolphins. The Jets will host the Cincinnati Bengals on Thanksgiving Night in the late game on NFL Network.

The 2010 season starts tough for the Jets with home games against Baltimore and New England and with the road Sunday night football game at Miami.

Offense:

Mark Sanchez had a roller coaster year like most rookies do in the NFL. The former USC Trojan completed only 53.8% of his passes for 12 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with a 63.0 passer rating. He had a rough time reading opposing defenses and often made poor decisions with the football during the regular season.

The post season was different as just like in the Rose Bowl in his final game in college Sanchez raised his game in big spots. The rookie led the team to a 2-1 post season record and completed 60.3% of his passes with four touchdowns and 2 picks and a passer rating of 92.7. A high spot was a huge touchdown pass in victory at San Diego.

The Jets are built to run with an excellent line providing running lanes for their backs. The Jets were the #1 run team in 2009 by averaging 172.3 yards per game and a 4.5 yards per carry number.

New York cut ties with running back Leon Washington and Thomas Jones in the off season. Shonn Greene will be the featured back in the Jets lineup. The second year running back was the #3 back heading into the 2009 season but got his opportunity after Leon Washington was lost for the season. Green finished with 108 carries for a 5.0 yards a carry average and 2 touchdowns. He had his most carries in the post season as he produced 135 yards on 21 carries in a win at Cincinnati and 128 yards on 23 carries in the teams victory against the Chargers.

The team took a chance by signing a declining LaDainian Tomlinson as the #2 back. L.T. had been hampered by injury problems the past few seasons and only produced a 3.3 yards per carry average on 223 carries in 2009. He is a threat out of the backfield as in 10 years he has 530 career catches for a 7.5 yards per catch average and may be used in third downs for the Jets.

For depth the Jets drafted USC running back Joe McKnight. Former USC back Chauncey Washington was signed for insurance and may be headed to the Jets practice squad.

To aid Sanchez in the passing game the team upgraded their receiver position. Santanio Holmes was acquired via trade from Pittsburgh and will be the #1 back with Braylon Edwards #2. Jerricho Cotchery and Brad Smith will be the #3 and #4. Holmes has a career 16.3 yards per catch average and has a wide wingspan. He has been suspended for the teams first four games with an illegal drug violation.

Braylon Edwards was hampered by dropped passes last season and will need to stay concentrated throughout the game as the Jets still will run first.

Tight end Dustin Keller returns and had 45 catches in 2009 with an 11.6 yards per catch average.

The Jets offensive line will have Nick Mangold at center with Vladimir Ducasse and Brandon Moore at guard. D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Damien Woody are the tackles. The Jets lost guard Alan Faneca in free agency to the Cardinals. Ducasse was the clubs second round draft pick out of UMASS and is on the Jets depth chart as the starting guard. Three year pro Robert Turner backs him up. The Jets allowed only 30 sacks last season.

Defense:

The Jets run a 3-4 defense that will feature veteran Kris Jenkins at nose tackle with Shaun Ellis and Mike Devito at the tackles. The Jets were #8 against the run last season allowing only 98.6 yards rushing per game. Jenkins missed the teams final 10 regular season games and 3 post season games with knee surgery. The Jets had only 32 sacks last season ranking 18th in the league. The team must bring a better pass rush with their front three so the Jets don’t have to over blitz.

The linebackers will feature Bart Scott and David Harris inside with Bryon Thomas and Calvin Pace on the outside. Pace led the team with 8 sacks a season ago. Former first round pick Vernon Gholston has been sent to the bench in a reserve role. The core did an outstanding job last season in stopping opposing running backs.

The Jets are blessed with a solid secondary that ranked #1 against the pass. The unit features Darrelle Revis and newly acquired Antonio Cromartie at the corners with Jim Leonard and Eric Smith at the safeties. Cromartie was acquired in a trade with the Chargers. San Diego let him go due to Cromartie’s unwillingness to take on opposing running backs in the run game. There is no better man to man corner in the league than Darrelle Revis. Jim Leonard is big hitter and is great at reading opposing quarterbacks. The Jets have depth with first round draft pick Dwight Lowery out of Boise St.

And now to my Selection:

For the New York Jets to get to 10 wins they will need to be much better than their 4-6 record against the AFC East in 2009. They have the talent to split with Miami and New England and to sweep the Bills this season to finish at 4-2 versus the division.

Mark Sanchez has good weapons in the passing game with Santanio Holmes and the second year signal caller will utilize LaDainian Tomlinson out of the backfield in passing situations isolated against opposing linebackers.

This can open up a lot of big play potential for the Jets as Sanchez possess the quality to throw over coverage. The Jets defense will be just as good as they were in 2009 with nose tackle Kris Jenkins healthy for a full season.

The Jets get to at least 10 wins this season.

Selection: Play Over 9 ½ wins in 2010 Regular Season.
