It was another season of misery for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009 as the squad finished with a 4-12 record and last place in the AFC West.
It has been a poor three seasons for the club as the team has won just 10 games overall.
The team began 0-5 to start 2009 and then won 3 of their next 5. But what followed were 5 straight losses to ensure another bad season in Kansas City.
The Chiefs were atrocious defensively as they sat 30th in the league in total defense by allowing 388.2 yards per game. The team was 31st against the run allowing 156.5 yards per game.
The team allowed 34 or more points to their opponents on 6 occasions and 41 or more in three games.
It was a rough year for quarterback Matt Cassel who finished up with 16 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions in 2009 in his first year under center for the Chiefs.
A positive for Kansas City was the running of Jamaal Charles. The back was inserted when the team parted ways with inept back Larry Johnson. Charles went on to average 5.9 yards a carry in 190 attempts for 1120 yards in 209.
The Chiefs off season moves includes the hiring of Charlie Weiss as offensive coordinator and Romeo Crennel as defensive coordinator. Both were former coordinators of Super Bowl teams under head coach Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots.

2010 Kansas City Chiefs Regular Season Schedule:
The team competes in the AFC West division so they will have a game home and away against the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers.
The AFC West in 2010 will compete against the NFC West and AFC South divisions.
The Chiefs opponents from the AFC South will be home games against Jacksonville and Tennessee with road tilts at Houston and Indianapolis.
The NFC West opponents for Kansas City in 2010 will be at home to the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals with road games at the St Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks.
With their last place finish in the 2009 regular season the Kansas City Chiefs must play the two other last place teams from their conference so that will bring a home game against the Buffalo Bills and a road trip to the Cleveland Browns.
Kansas City’s lone prime time appearance will be on opening night when the team hosts the San Diego Chargers in the late game on Monday Night Football.
The team has the fortune of closing out the 2010 regular season with 2 home games as they conclude against Tennessee and Oakland.
Offense:
In his first year leading the Kansas City offense Matt Cassel finished off play completing 55% of his passes for 2924 yards 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. New offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will inspire confidence in Cassel with rapport already built from their time in New England. Kansas City quarterbacks were sacked 45 times last season.
Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will share carries in the Kansas City backfield this season. Charles rushed for 1120 yards on 190 carries last season with 7 touchdowns and an impressive 5.9 yards per carry average. Jones rushed for 4.2 yards a carry and 14 rushing touchdowns in 2009 on 331 attempts. The 11 year back has amassed two season consecutively with over 1300 yards rushing.
The wide outs are Dwayne Bowe and Chris Chambers as the #1 and #2. Lance Long and Jerheme Urban are the two backups. Bowe led the club in 2009 with 47 receptions and had 589 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns. He faced a 4 week suspension in 2009 for a banned substance and dropped a lot of passes and eventually led the league in dropped passes despite missing 5 games in 2009. Consistency issues haunted Chris Chambers in San Diego and was let go in mid season. While with Kansas City the 10 year pro caught 45 passes for 730 yards and 5 touchdowns. To add depth to the receiving corps the Chiefs drafted Dexter McCluster running back from Ole Miss and will convert the rookie to a slot receiver. Former Arizona Cardinals receiver Jerheme Urban comes over in free agency to provide depth to the teams unit. Leonard Pope is the tight end who contributed with 20 catches and an 8.7 yards per catch average.
The offensive line will feature Rudy Niswanger at center with guards Brian Waters and Ryan Lilja. The bookend tackles are Branden Albert and Ryan O’Callaghan. Their line will need to be much better in pass protection as they yielded 45 sacks last season. Lilja comes over from the Colts in free agency. The team signed center Casey Wiegmann as a free agent from the Broncos to provide depth.

Defense:
The Chiefs run a 3-4 defense which will feature Ron Edwards as nose tackle with Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey at the end positions. Dorsey has never lived up to the hype since leaving LSU and had just 1 sack last season. Jackson another LSU product produced 0 sacks in 2009. These numbers are pretty pathetic really for these two young defensive ends with so much potential coming out of college. These front three need to find a way to generate a pass rush without forcing the team to throw the kitchen sink at the quarterback and put their pass coverage at risk for big plays. They need to force double teams to open up lanes for their linebackers to stop the run.
The inside linebackers are Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays with the veteran Mike Vrabel and Tamba Hali on the outside. Hali led the club with 8 ½ sacks last season but Vrabel produced just 2.
At corner the Chiefs will go with Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr. The safeties will be Jarrad Page and 1st round draft pick Eric Berry out of Tennessee who was the 5th pick in the draft. Cornerback Javier Arenas was drafted by the Chiefs in the 2nd round out of Alabama to provide much needed depth to the back four.
And now to my Selection:
The Chiefs showed the ability to run the ball effectively towards the end of the season behind Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones is a good addition. Chambers showed promise in the Kansas City system and the jury is still out on whether Dwyane Bowe can mature into the position. Jerheme Urban could be the surprise spark plug the Chiefs need in their receiving corps as he showed good ability with Arizona. I like the Urban pick up.
The question mark for this club starts with the front three on defense. Dorsey, Jackson and Edwards must simply play better which will greatly aid the linebackers and secondary for the Chiefs. Twenty two sacks in 2009 was an embarrassment. My guess is that new defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is just one more off season away from bringing stability to his defensive line unit and are a year away from contending.
The Chiefs will be involved in a lot of shootout games this season and the schedule is a bit easier in 2010 based on a last place finish last season. They get the NFC West this season so they could win 2 of 4 games against that bunch in 2010. The Kansas City offense will be a bit ahead of their defense and will lead them to at least 7 wins in 2010.
Selection: Play Over 6 ½ wins in 2010 Regular Season.
