The San Diego Chargers in the 2009 regular season finished with a regular season record of 13-3 and atop the AFC West division.

The Chargers hosted the New York Jets in the AFC Divisional playoffs and for the fourth straight post season failed to advance to the Super Bowl as the team lost 17-14 at home to a team sporting a first year quarterback.

After beginning the 2009 season at 2-3 it was San Diego closing out the year with an 11 game regular season winning streak to close the regular season.

The Chargers were a bit too quarterback dependent last season. San Diego was #5 in the league in passing with 271.1 yards per game.

The Chargers were hampered by an inept running attack and it was finally time for the club to rid itself of running back LaDainian Tomlinson and his horrid 3.3 yards per carry average. The team was 31st in the league in rushing with only 88.9 yards per game.

The team did itself well by drafting running back Ryan Mathews in the first round.

The club improved on defense in 2009 and finished 11th against the pass allowing 209.3 yards per game. .

2010 San Diego Chargers Regular Season Schedule:

San Diego plays in the AFC West division so on their schedule will be games home and away against the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos.

The Chargers AFC West division will compete in the 2010 regular season against the AFC South and NFC West.

San Diego will play from the AFC South home games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans with road games against the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

The Chargers NFC West games will be home to the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers with road trips to the St Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks.

As the top team in the AFC West in 2009 the Chargers must play the two other first place teams from the AFC and that will bring a home game against the New England Patriots and a road trip to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Chargers will conclude the 2010 regular season with road trips at the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos. The Bengals game is scheduled as a Sunday night prime time contest.

San Diego will play at Indianapolis on a Sunday night game and open the season with a prime time game on Monday night at the Kansas City Chiefs. In week 13 they host the Denver Broncos on Monday night football.

Offense:

San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers carried the offense on his back in 2010. The club was 5th in the league in passing averaging 271.1 yards per game and #4 in scoring at 27.5 points per game.

Rivers completed 65.2% of his passes for 4254 yards 28 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions in 2009. He ended with a passer rating of 104.4.

The Chargers quarterback got no help from his running game which ranked 31st in the league averaging 88.9 yards per game and only 3.3 yards per carry. Ryan Mathews was drafted in the first round to help the Chargers run game between the tackles. Darren Sproles is still a weapon outside the tackles and in the passing and return game in open space.

The Chargers are loaded the receiver position with Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd as the #1 and #2. The #3 and #4 receivers are Buster Davis and Legedu Naanee. Antonio Gates returns healthy at tight end for 2010 season. Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson combined for over 1150 yards receiving a year ago. Jackson will miss the first three games of the season by a substance abuse violation.

The Chargers offense line will feature veteran Nick Hardwick at center with Kris Dielman and Louis Vasquez at guard. Marcus McNeill and Jeromey Clary start at tackle. The Chargers offensive line allowed just 23 sacks a year ago. Guards Dielman and Vazquez are very skilled in pulling and blocking for the Chargers screen plays.

Defense:

The Chargers run a 3-4 defense that will feature Ogemdi Nwagbuo at nose tackle with Jacques Cesaire and veteran Luis Castillo at defensive ends. The Chargers with their fourth round draft pick selected Cam Thomas from that very good North Carolina Tar Heel front four. Thomas will compete to see action backing up Nwagbuo at nose tackle. The Chargers like to rotate their front three to keep them fresh.

The linebackers will feature Brandon Siler and Stephen Cooper in the middle with Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman on the outside. The Chargers got to the quarterback 34 times in 2009 ranking 13th in the league. Phillips led the team with 7 sacks and Merriman had only 4.

The Chargers lost cornerback Antonio Cromartie as he was traded to the Jets. Cromartie had built up a good reputation around the league but in San Diego they are happy to see him go for his lack of toughness and how fearful he is of taking on opposing running backs and blockers in stopping the run.

Word is that the film sessions were not to comfortable for Cromartie answering questions from the coaching staff on opponents run plays. Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason start at corners and Kevin Elison and Eric Weddle as safeties. The club signed free agent Nathan Vasher from Chicago to provide backup at corner. Cason steps in Cromartie’s place as starter.

And now to my Selection:

Phillip Rivers will finally have a running back than can help burn clock in the fourth quarter and limit possessions for opposing teams. Ryan Mathews is the real thing as he possessed fine running skills while at Fresno State. He performed greatly between the tackles in his huge test at Wisconsin last season.

The Chargers improved running game will extend possessions and help keep the Chargers defense off the field. With balance on offense the Chargers defense improves facing less snaps against the unit this season.

The Chargers get to at least 12 wins in the regular season. The schedule is easy for the Chargers in the first three games so they will be able to overcome the loss of Vincent Jackson due to suspension.

Selection: Play Over 11 wins in 2010 Regular Season.
