Trends Matchups Picks Injuries Odds NFL College Football ScoresPublished: July 15, 2010
The 2009 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a huge disappointment going just 3-13 during the 2009 regular season.
It was the second straight season for the Buccaneers sitting out the NFL playoffs.
Tampa Bay under rookie head coach Raheem Morris began the season at 0-7 and 1-14 looking very inept on the field.
The club finished 28th in total offense and 30th in scoring offense averaging just 15.3 points per game.
Defensively they were just as bad ending up the year ranked 27th in total defense allowing 365 yards per game. They were 27th in scoring defense as their opponents averaged 25 points per game. Tampa Bay was the worst rushing defense in the NFL in 2009 by allowing their opponents over 158 yards on the ground per game.
The Odds:
Bodog sportsbook has set the 2010 Tampa Bay Buccaneers regular season win projection as 5 ½ wins with over favored at -140 with the under bringing back +110.

2010 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Regular Season Schedule:
Tampa Bay competes in the NFC South division so they club will play home and away to the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers.
Teams from the NFC South division will play against the NFC West and AFC North in the 2010 regular season.
The Buccaneers NFC West games include home games against Seattle Seahawks and St Louis Rams with road trips at Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.
Tampa Bay’s AFC North opponents will be at home to Cleveland and Pittsburgh with games on the highway to Cincinnati and Baltimore.
Tampa Bay was fourth and last in the NFC South in 2009 so that means the team will compete against the two other last place NFC clubs from last year so that will bring a home game against the Detroit Lions and a road trip to the Washington Redskins.
Tampa Bay will be featured in no high profile primetime games this season after a 3 win season in 2009 and a poor outlook for the upcoming 2010 season.
They are a bit unlucky with both of their long west coast trips being the front end of back to back road trips.
After their road game at Arizona in week 8 they hit the road again in week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. In week 11 the club travels to San Francisco and must wheel back in week 12 with a road contest against the Baltimore Ravens.
Offense:
Second year quarterback Josh Freeman will enter training camp as the Buccaneers #1 starting quarterback. Freeman took over the reigns as starter in his rookie season and finished hitting on 54.5% of his passes with 10 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Freeman has a strong arm and can elude the pass rushers but makes very questionable decisions and was turnover prone. The team was 28th in the league in total offense with 287.5 yards a game.
The rushing game averaged 101.7 yards in 2009 ranking 23rd in the league. Cadillac Williams had a successful return from injury problems with 823 yards on 211 carries last season with 4 touchdowns.
After signing a big time contract in free agency former New York Giants Derrick Ward was a bust at running back with just a 3.6 yards per carry average last year. He got nearly ½ the carries than Williams did in 2009.
Michael Clayton and Reggie Brown are penciled in as starter at wide out for the Bucs. Brown comes in via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles where he caught just 9 passes a year ago. The 7 year pro Clayton had just 16 receptions for 230 yards a year ago. In desperate need of depth at the receiver position the club drafted Arrelious Benn in the second round out of Illinois and Mike Williams in the fourth round out of Syracuse. Tight end Kellen Winslow has a good campaign in 2009 with 77 catches for 884 yards and 5 touchdowns.
The look of the offensive line will be Jeff Faine at center flanked by guards Jeremy Zuttah and Davin Josepth. The tackles are expected to be Donald Penn and Jeremy Trueblood. The clubs offensive line allowed 33 sacks a year ago.

Defense:
It was a bad defense year for the Bucs last season. The team sat 32nd and last against the run allowing 158.2 yards per game and 207.4 yards per game against the pass.
The Buccaneers run the 4-3 defense. The defensive ends entering the season will be Tim Crowder and Stylez White. Gerald McCoy and Chris Hovan start inside. The Bucs had 33 sacks in 2010 with Stylez White leading the club with 6 ½ sacks. The club drafted defensive lineman with their first two picks with Gerald McCoy a defensive tackle with their number one pick and Brian Price a defensive tackle from UCLA with their number two pick.
The veteran Barrett Ruud starts at middle linebacker with Geno Hayes and Quincy Black to his outside.
The secondary for the Bucs will be Aqib Talib and the veteran Ronde Barber at corner with Sabby Piscitelli and Tanard Jackson at safety. The Buccaneers struggled mightily allowing opposing teams to throw over coverage as Sabby Piscitelli is a huge liability in pass coverage. Veteran Ronde Barber has lost a step and was burned big time last season. Sean Jones was signed in free agency from the Eagles last season and could spell Piscitelli should he fail to improve on a horrible 2009.
And now to my Selection:
Tampa Bay wont get to 6 wins this season. Starting quarterback Josh Freeman does not make good decision with the football and is mistake prone. Freeman is not blessed with much talent to throw the football too.
Look for opposing quarterbacks to attack 35 year old Ronde Barber in pass coverage as his days are definitely numbered in the NFL. Tampa Bay is counting on two rookies to come in and help their run defense but those two may need more development time to a new league.
Selection: Play Under 5 1/2 wins in 2010 Regular Season.
