The Washington Redskins 2009 nightmare regular season ended with a 4-12 record and last place in the NFC East.
The team failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season and fired head coach Jim Zorn and replaced him with a Super Bowl winning coach former Denver Bronco Mike Shanahan.
Following another dreadful season the team said goodbye to former starting quarterback Jason Campbell who was traded away to the Oakland Raiders. The Redskins then traded for former Philadelphia Eagles starter Donovan McNabb and the veteran will be under center this season.
The team struggled mightily out of the gate losing 6 of their first 8 games. The end saw the club losing 6 of 7 to finish play in the regular season.
Points were hard to come by for this squad as they averaged a mere 16.6 points per game ranking 26th in the league. The team sat at -11 turnover differential ranking 28th in the league.
The defense despite an inept offense was able to finish 10th in the league in 2009 surrendering 319.7 yards per game. The team was pretty good against the pass ranking 8th in the NFL.

2010 Washington Redskins Regular Season Schedule:
Washington plays in the NFC East division and that will bring 2 games against the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.
The Redskins division is scheduled in 2010 to play all the teams from the NFC North and AFC South.
The Redskins opponents from the NFC North will be home games against the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings with road contests at the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions.
Washington will draw from the AFC South home games against the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts with road encounters against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.
By finishing in last place in the NFC East the Washington Redskins are scheduled against the two other last place teams from the NFC Conference so that will mean a home game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and on the road to the St Louis Rams.
Offense:
Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb takes over the reign at quarterback for the Redskins. McNabb has made 6 pro bowls and has led the Eagles to the playoffs in three of the four past seasons and played in 1 Super Bowl.
The 12 year veteran quarterback completed 60.3% of his passes for 3553 yards 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions a year ago. McNabb has been injury prone in recent season missing games in 5 of his past 6 seasons as the Eagles starter.
The Redskins are old at running back as veterans Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker all vie for carries in 2010. These three are all past their prime. Johnson and Parker put up miserable numbers the past season. Portis was hit with a concussion injury that limited his action as he missed the final 8 games of the season.
There is not much to get to excited about the receiving corps as well as Santana Moss and Devin Thomas are penciled in as the starters. Terrance Austin and Malcolm Kelly are projected as the #3 and #4 receivers. Kelly had just 25 catches are year ago with a 13.9 yards per catch average and no touchdowns.
Chris Cooley returns as tight end for the Redskins. He missed the final 9 games of the regular season with a broken ankle. He had 29 catches for 332 yards and an 11.4 yards per catch average and 2 touchdowns in 7 games in 2009. Back up tight end Fred Davis saw much action with Cooley’s injury last season. The three year tight end contributed with 48 catches for 509 yards and 6 touchdowns.
The Redskins offensive line allowed 46 sacks a season ago. At center heading into camp is Casey Rabach and he will be flanked at starting guards by Derrick Dockery and Artis Hicks. The tackles are Trent Williams and Stephon Heyer. Williams is the Redskins rookie left tackle who was drafted by Washington with the #4 pick of the draft. He replaces the retired Chris Samuels. The Redskins got a blow to the depth of their line as reserve tackle Mike Williams will miss the 2010 season due to blood clots near his heart.

Defense:
The news during the off season was not good for the Redskins defense. The team is shifting to a 3-4 and that didn’t sit too well with Albert Haynesworth who will be forced to switch positions up front. Haynesworth does not want to play nose tackle and requested a trade that thus far hasn’t been granted. Phillip Daniels and Kedric Golston will make the rest of the front three.
At outside linebackers the team sets up with Brian Orakpo and Andre Carter with Rocky McIntosh and London Fletcher on the inside. Defensively the Redskins allowed just 4.0 yards per carry to their opponents.
The Redskins have a quality back four in their secondary as Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall man the corners with Reed Doughty and LaRon Landry at safety. Veteran Phillip Buchanon backs up the cornerback position.
And now to my Selection:
Donovan McNabb is an upgrade at the quarterback position but the team did very little to help him in the passing and running game. If Donovan McNabb’s receivers don’t get open he may be vulnerable to sacks and his 33 year old body may not hold up to much more abuse as we have seen in recent years. Rex Grossman is his backup.
Teams will likely key on the Redskins tight ends to force the Redskins weak receiving corps to make plays.
With the solid pass rush facing McNabb in two games this season against the Cowboys, Giants and Eagles it could get ugly for him. The Redskins must also face the Packers, Colts, Titans, Texans and Vikings that makes the teams chance at getting to 8 wins this season a difficult chore. They face the Bears at Chicago.
I don’t see a 4 game improvement from this team in 2010 against this schedule. The Redskins need more than just a 1 position upgrade. The Redskins home games are brutal aiding our cause for an under.
Selection: Play Under 7 1/2 wins in 2010 Regular Season.
