Trends Matchups Picks Injuries Odds NFL College Football ScoresPublished: July 13, 2010
The New York Giants finished off a disappointing 2009 regular season campaign with an 8-8 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2006 season.
The team suffered through an injury riddled year that impacted their defense and running back position.
After an 8-8 season the team made a change in defensive coordinator as Perry Fewell now takes over a unit that ranked 30th in scoring by giving up an average of 26.7 points a game.
The Giants started the year winning 5 straight games to open at 5-0. Following the clubs 44-7 victory over the Oakland Raiders it was linebacker Antonio Pierce using poor judgment by addressing the media about the lack of heart showed by the Raiders on the field. He should have kept his mouth shut and worry about his own squad.
In the off season Pierce was cut and could not find work and will be a talking head in 2010. The club then endured a four game losing streak and finished the season losing two straight allowing 41 point to Carolina and 44 at Minnesota to end the year at 8-8.

2010 New York Giants Regular Season Schedule:
The Giants are part of the NFC East so the team will play two games each home and away against the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.
The NFC East is scheduled to play the NFC North and AFC South.
NFC North opponents will include home games to Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions with road trips at the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. The Giants will face the tougher teams from the NFC North on the road this season.
The teams AFC South opponents are home games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans with road contests at the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.
As the third place team in the NFC East the Giants will be scheduled against the two other third place NFC clubs so that brings a home game against the Carolina Panthers and a road game at the Seattle Seahawks.
Offense:
Eli Manning is coming off his best season in 2009 by passing for over 4,000 yards and completing 62.3% of his passes. Manning had 27 touchdown passes with 14 interceptions. The seven year veteran looked very much like the leader of this ball club last season so leadership questions entering the current season has been diffused.
After back to back seasons averaging over 5 yards a carry the Giants running attack faltered to just 4.1 yards per carry average and finished 17th in the NFL last season. Brandon Jacobs was hampered by knee ailments and it limited his production in 2009 to just a 3.7 yards per carry back. Ahmad Bradshaw produced a 4.8 yards per carry average last season with 7 touchdowns despite playing through foot injuries. The Giants need their two backs healthy in 2010 to move the chains and aid their defense.
The club was 11th in passing last year with 251.2 yards per game. There were plenty of question marks around the receiving corps following the arrest of Plaxico Burress. Steve Smith stepped up with 107 receptions and 7 touchdowns. He is a chain mover who had big catches for the team on third down and is not a vertical big play threat for the club.
In his rookie season Hakeem Nicks had 47 catches for 790 yards and 6 touchdowns with an impressive 16.2 yards per catch average. Third year wide out Mario Manningham had issues dropping the football last season. Week 2 in 2009 was impressive for the young receiver as he produced 10 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown against the Cowboys. He had dropped down the depth chart to the number three receiver to start training camp but has shown some potential if he can only avoid those costly mental errors. Four year pro tight end Kevin Boss returns after a 2009 season with 42 catches and a 13.5 yards per catch average and 5 touchdowns.
The Giants have an experienced offensive line that did not meet expectations in run blocking last season.

Defense:
The Giants lost their mantra on defense in 2009. The squad looked simply awful at times. They allowed 5 opponents in 2009 to score over 40 points against them.
Much like their offensive line the defensive line did not play to expectations. The club had just 32 sacks last season ranking 18th in the league and simply not playing to their talent level.
The Giants front four entering training camp will be bookends Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka with Barry Cofield and Jay Alford manning the tackles inside. Osi Umenyiora was demoted to the second string. The club drafted defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul from South Florida in the first round and defensive tackle Linval Joseph out of East Carolina in the second round. If these young players can vie for playing time with a good preseason we could see some player movement near the last cuts as teams may look to trade for some of the Giants depth at this position.
Antonio Pierce was cut from the team and could not find a job in the NFL and will work as a broadcaster. Jonathan Goff sits in the middle with Michael Boley and Clint Sintim out wide. The team has youth at this position and needs more plays from this unit in 2010.
The secondary was much maligned last season. The team lost safety Kenny Phillips due to injury and were without cornerback Aaron Ross. The Giants never recovered from their early season injuries to their secondary. Corey Webster had a forgettable season. Antrelle Rollle was signed to play at safety in free agency. Rolle is akin to make the big play but he does gamble a lot. Starting at corner entering training camp is Corey Webster and Terrell Thomas with Kenny Phillips and Antrel Rolle at safety.
And now to my Selection:
Injuries took their toll to the 2009 New York Giants. The club’s hiring of former Buffalo defensive coordinator Perry Fewell is a good one. The Bills competed in games with a stout defense despite an inept offense. Tom Coughlin is an excellent coach and look for a bounce back from the defensive and offensive lines in 2010. The Giants running game will be better with Jacobs and Bradshaw healthy again. With depth at the defensive line look for the Giants to bring a much improved pass rush in 2010 as the veterans will look to keep their jobs with plenty of depth behind them.
Selection: Play Over 8 ½ wins in 2010 Regular Season.

Much to improve at the linebacker core, specially at middle without Pierce.
