The 2010 Kentucky Derby will see 20 three year olds entered for the first jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday afternoon. Post time for the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for 6:24PM Eastern Time and you can watch it on NBC. The Kentucky Derby has been scheduled as Race 11 on Saturday’s Churchill Downs card.

The winner of the 2010 Kentucky Derby was #4 Super Saver.
Super Saver paid $18.00, $8.80 and $6.00

Running second was #2 Ice Box.
Ice Box paid $11.20 and $8.20

In third was #10 Paddy O’Prado
Paddy O’Prado paid $$7.40

Fourth was #9 Make Music For Me

Exacta 4-2 paid $152.40

Trifecta 4-2-10 paid $2,337.40

Superfecta 4-2-10-9 paid $202,569.20

The Kentucky Derby is contested at a 1 ¼ of a mile and run over the main dirt surface at Churchill Downs.

It is interesting to note that today’s field sports plenty of early speed and front runners. The Derby preps held in Southern California and on select tracks around the nation have been contested on synthetic surfaces. Many trainers have figured out the formula to be successful on these surfaces is to be at or near the lead. For this reason we have seen many horses who prefer this racing style and were forced to run this style to earn enough money to get entered into this race. There may be value in the Trifecta and Superfecta as we could see some extreme long shots passing the tired horses that can’t hold their speed for 1 ¼ of a mile.

Play #20 Sidney’s Candy and #13 Jackson Bend to win.

Sidney’s Candy has been the class of the west coast as this three year old has won three prep races at Santa Anita leading up to the Kentucky Derby. He showed great late kick in winning the San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby in his first two races going around two turns. He posted a 100 Beyer on the synthetics during his run at the Santa Anita Derby. Trainer John Sadler has done well with his first timers on dirt running off synthetics. Joe Talamo has been aboard this colt for every race of his career.

Jackson Bend has been an ultra consistent racehorse. In 9 starts this colt has produced 5 wins and 4 seconds. He is only one of three horses that have produced a triple digit Beyer in this field and the horse did it going 1 1/16th of a mile. Jackson Bend has been second best to the scratched Eskenderya in the Fountain of Youth and Wood Memorial Kentucky Derby prep races. Eskenderya would have been favored in this race had he not come up lame a week ago.

Ice Box is coming off a nice win in the Grade 1 Florida Derby. He is one with come from behind potential as he made up over 7 lengths from the back stretch to earn the nose victory in the Florida Derby. If the track comes off sloppy he did have a bullet work over the sloppy Churchill Downs track on April 23rd. Ice Box in one of the freshest contenders in this race having last ran on March 20th. I like his chances getting into the exotics.

Here is one of the long shots who I feel will pass the tiring horses in the Kentucky Derby that is full of early speed. Mission Impazible has made up ground in the stretch in every one of his career 5 races. The son of Unbridled’s Song is coming off a win at the Louisiana Derby with a late run in the stretch.

Dean’s Kitten is an extreme long shot that will benefit from the fast pace I project in this race. Here is another horse when you look at his past performances likes to make up ground late in the race. He is coming off a win at the Lane’s End, which is a Grade 2 prep for the Kentucky Derby. This is a turf horse that makes up ground in the stretch and is a great long shot to put in your Superfecta box.
