On Saturday May 1st it will be 20 three year olds participating in the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Derby is scheduled as the 11th race at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Post time is scheduled for 6:24PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by NBC. The early weather forecast has called for a 60% chance of rain on Kentucky Derby day.
Here is a look at all 20 starters for the 2010 version of the Kentucky Derby.
Breaking from post position number one is the morning line favorite Looking at Lucky who came in at 3-1 odds. Looking at Lucky will be ridden by Garrett Gomez and is trained by Bob Baffert. He is a winner of 6 of his past 8 races and coming off a third place finish by 6 lengths in the Santa Anita Derby behind Kentucky Derby entrant Sidney’s Candy. This will be Looking at Lucky’s 6th Grade 1 race of his career and he posts a record of three wins a second and a third in his five tries. His best ever Beyer was a 98 posted on dirt at the Grade 2 Rebel where he finished 1st at Oaklawn Park in a Derby prep on March 13th.
Coming in from the two hole will be the three year old colt Ice Box. The horse will be ridden by Jorge Lezcano and is trained by Nick Zito. Ice Box is lined in the betting at 10-1. Ice Box has three wins in seven lifetime starts. He has raced in only one Grade 1 race and it was a winning performance in the Florida Derby back on March 20th on the dirt at Gulfstream Park. He posted his best ever dirt Beyer that day with a 99 in victory during his Florida Derby victory. The colt has not raced since March 20th since winning at 20-1 odds at the Florida Derby. He needed four races to break his Maiden in 2009.
In post position number three will be Noble Promise. The colt will be ridden in the Kentucky Derby by Willie Martinez and is trained by Kenneth McPeek. Noble’s Promise has three wins in 8 lifetime starts. He came in at 12-1 odd on the morning line. Noble’s Promise has participated in four Grade 1 races and holds one 1 win in those tries. It was the Breeders Futurity run on the synthetic surface at Keenland way back on October 9th earned the three year old a Grade 1 win. The Breeders Futurity was the last time Noble’s Promise got his picture taken in the winner’s circle. His best ever Beyer number on dirt was a 98 he posted in a second place finish in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes back on March 13th. Noble’s Promise is coming off a 5th place finish last time out at the Arkansas Derby on April 10th where he produced just a 91 dirt Beyer.
From post four will be Super Saver. This three-year-old colt will have the services of Calvin Borel in the saddle and is trained by Todd Pletcher. Super Saver had odds of 15-1 in the morning line. This colt has 5 lifetime races in his brief career and has produced 2 wins, 2 seconds and a third. He has raced in two Grade 1 races with no better than a 2nd place finish, which came in his last race on April 10th in the Arkansas Derby. The Arkansas Derby also produced his lifetime best Beyer number as he posted a 98. Borel has rode this horse on two other occasions and besides his second place finish in the Arkansas Derby Borel was aboard for his win as a 2 year old in the Grade 2 Kentucky Juveniles Cup run on November 2009 at Churchill Downs.
Starting from post position five is Line of David. This racehorse will have jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard and is trained by John Sadler. Line of David has 6 career starts and has produced 3 wins and a third. Line of David participated in only one Grade 1 Stakes and it was as winning run as the colt won the Arkansas Derby on April 10th on the dirt at Oaklawn Park. Prior to that came a victory in a straight Allowance race and before that Line of David broke his Maiden on February 13th at Santa Anita in his fourth career race. Line of David’s best ever dirt Beyer was a 98 while racing in the Arkansas Derby in his only try on the dirt in his brief career.
Racing from post 6 is Stately Victor. The colt will be ridden by Alan Garcia and is trained by Michael Maker. He is a longshot with morning line odds of 30-1. He has 8 lifetime performances and has come away with 2 wins and a third. He has raced in 2 Grade 1 races with a win and a 6th place finish. Following his 6th place finish in the Breeders Futurity in Keenland the horse competed mainly against Allowance company. He then faced a Grade 1 crop his last time out at the Blue Grass Stakes and came away with a victory on April 10th at Keenland over the synthetics. Stately Victor’s best ever dirt Beyer was only a 75 at Gulfstream Park on January 10th against an Allowance field. That was his last performance on dirt as the colt tried two races on turf prior to his win at the Blue Grass over synthetics.
Entering the gate in the 7th position is the three-year-old colt American Lion. The racehorse will be ridden by the veteran David Flores and is trained by Eoin Harty. American Lion has 6 lifetime starts with three wins, a second and a third place finish. He has not raced against Grade 1 company before. After 5 straight starts over the synthetic surfaces we saw American Lion make his debut on dirt and he produced a victory in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby ran at Hawthorne racetrack on April 3rd. He produced an outstanding 98 Beyer figure in his only effort on dirt. Prior to his Illinois Derby, American Lion ran forth to Sidney’s Candy in the Grade 2 San Felipe States by 4 ¼ lengths behind. He has a front running style and is by Tiznow. American Lion is a 30-1 morning line long shot in the Kentucky Derby.
It will be Dean’s Kitten racing from the 8th post on Saturday. The three-year-old thoroughbred will have the services of Robbie Albarado in the saddle and is trained by Michael Maker. Dean’s Kitten has 3 wins, a second and 2 third place finishes in 11 lifetime races. He was very active in his two-year-old campaign with 8 races total. He has no Grade 1 races to his credit. He has raced only once on dirt and that was on a sloppy track on Belmont Park in October of 2009 in a race originally scheduled on the turf. He did not fare very well that day posting a 5th place finish by 33 ¼ lengths and only a 28 Beyer. Eight of Dean’s Kittens 11 races have been run over the turf course. He is coming off a win in the Grade 2 Lanes End Stakes back on March 27th on the synthetic surface of Turfway Park back on March 27th. He produced his best every Beyer on that day with a 93 in that race on synthetics. The morning line for Dean’s Kitten is that of an extreme long shot with odds of 50-1.
The #9 horse is the 50-1 longshot Make Music for Me. This three year old is ridden by Joel Rosario and is trained by Alexis Barba. The long shot has 8 lifetime races with only 1 win, two seconds and a third. He has participated in four Grade 1 races and produced no better than a second place finish. His lone win came in a turf event in a non-graded stakes at Santa Anita on March 6th. Make Music for Me is coming off a 6th place finish by 8 lengths at the Blue Grass Stakes on April 10th. His best ever Beyer was a 93 he produced in his only win at the Pasadena Stakes on the turf at Santa Anita. Make Music for Me is making his debut on dirt at the Kentucky Derby.
Running in the #10 post is Paddy O’ Prado. This three year old is ridden by Kent Desormeaux and is trained by Dale Romans. Paddy O’ Prado has 6 career starts with just 1 win, two seconds and two thirds. He has raced in only 1 Grade 1 and that was a second place finish in the Blue Grass Stakes run on synthetics back on April 10th at Keenland. Four of his six lifetime starts have come on turf. His lone race on dirt was his first ever start of his career and he produced a 7th place finish in a straight Maiden race and producing just a 75 Beyer. His best ever Beyer came on turf with a 93 number posted in the Grade 3 Palm Beach ran on turf at Gulfstream Park on March 6th. Paddy O’ Prado is lined at 20-1 in the morning line.
The #11 horse in the Kentucky Derby is the lone filly in this race in Devil May Care. The filly will be ridden in the Kentucky Derby by Jorge Velazquez and is trained by Todd Pletcher. She has 5 lifetime starts to her credit with 3 victories, no seconds and no thirds. She is only one of three horses entered in the Kentucky Derby with a triple digit Beyer to her record. She has never raced against the boys and has participated in 2 Grade 1 victories with a 1st place finish in the Frizette at Belmont Park and an 11th place finish on the synthetic surface at Santa Anita in the Breeder Cup Juvenile fillies race on November 6th. Her last race was her best as she produced a 100 Beyer in the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss run over Gulfstream Park on March 20th. She is only making her third start this year and is lined at 10-1 in the morning line.
Lined up as the #12 horse in the Kentucky Derby is the colt Conveyance. This three year old will have Matt Garcia riding and is trained by Bob Baffert. Conveyance has 5 lifetime starts and has produced 4 wins and a second. He will be making his first appearance in a Grade 1 race on Saturday. This horse is coming off a second place finish at the Sunland Derby on March 28th and produced a 96 Beyer on dirt. His best ever dirt Beyer was a 97 figure in his first place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park on February 20th. His best ever Beyer was a 99 in a 6 furlong event at Hollywood Park way back on November 25th against an Allowance field on the synthetics. Conveyance is 12-1 on the morning line.
Jackson Bend is racehorse #13 in the Kentucky Derby. This colt will be ridden by the veteran Mike Smith and is trained by Nick Zito He has 9 lifetime starts and has 5 victories and 4 seconds. Jackson Bend has participated in one Grade 1 race and it was a second place finish he produced in his last day at the races in the Wood Memorial ran over Belmont Park on April 10th. Jackson Bend spent most of his early career racing at Calder Race Course making his first 6 starts over the dirt surface. He has produced 5 wins and only 1-second place finish and posted a career best 100 dirt Beyer in winning 1 1/6th mile non-graded stakes race at Calder as a two year old in October of 2009. After that effort Jackson Bend had second place finishes in the Holy Bull, Fountain of Youth and Wood Memorial as he leads up to the Kentucky Derby. Out of post position number 14 will be Mission Impazible. This three year old is 20-1 on the morning line. Mission Impazible has 5 lifetime starts with 2 wins; a second and 2 third place finishes to his credit. He has never raced in a Grade 1 race in his career. Riding the colt will be Rajiv Maragh and is trained by Todd Pletcher. The horse is coming off a win in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby run on dirt at 1 1/8th of a mile on March 27. He has raced in sloppy conditions on dirt before and ran 2nd in an Allowance race on January 9th at Gulfstream Park and produced an 87 Beyer.
Discreetly Mine is racehorse #14 in the Kentucky Derby. This colt will be ridden by Javier Castellano and is trained by Todd Pletcher. Discreetly Mine has 8 career starts with 2 wins and 3 second place finishes. He has participated in one Grade 1 race finishing second in the Champaign Stakes back on October 10th at Belmont Park during his two year old campaign. The three year old won the Grade 2 Risen Star two races back at Fair Grounds racetrack on February 10th. His last effort produced a 4th place finish in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds on March 27th. Discreetly Mine’s best ever Beyer came in the Risen Star where he produced a 94 dirt figure. The horse breaking for post 16 is Awesome Act. The three year old is 10-1 on the morning line and will be ridden by Julien Leparoux and is trained by Jeremy Noseda. Awesome Act has 8 lifetime starts and produced 2 wins, 2 seconds and 2 third place finishes. He has participated states side in one Grade 1 race and ran third in the Wood Memorial back on April 3rd on the dirt at Aqueduct. The horse spent most of his two year old racing career in England and debuted in the U.S. in November of 2009 running fourth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita. The best ever dirt Beyer Awesome Act produced was a 98 number in victory at the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct back on March 6th.
Dublin will be the number 17 horse in the Kentucky Derby. The colt will be ridden by Terry Thompson and trained by the veteran D. Wayne Lucas. Dublin has 8 lifetime starts and has produced two wins, a second and two thirds. He has not earned a victory in his three-year-old campaign. Dublin came in at 12-1 on the morning line. The horse has participated in three Grade 1 efforts and has no wins with his best finish coming in his last race at the Arkansas Derby where he ran third. He posted his best ever Beyer number in his journey at Oaklawn Park in the Arkansas Derby as he produced a 97 dirt figure.
Competing from post position #18 will be Backtalk. The three year old will be ridden by jockey Miguel Mena and is trained by Tom Amos. He is an extreme longshot at 50-1 on the morning line. The horse has 4 wins and a third in 7 career races. He has participated in two Grade 1 races finishing no better than 4th in the Hopeful Stakes in Saratoga as a two year old. He raced in one Grade 1 event and won the Champaign Stakes during his two-year-old campaign at Belmont Park on October 10th on the dirt. He participated in only one Grade 1 race but it was a good one as the colt finished first in the Santa Anita Derby held on April 3rd. He produced his best ever Beyer on that day with a triple digit 100 figure. The Kentucky Derby will be Sidney’s Candy’s first effort on a dirt surface. The colt is on a three-race win streak heading into Saturday’s first jewel of the Triple Crown. The horse has won every race during his three year old campaign as addition to his romp on April 3rd he was first in the San Vicente and San Felipe Stakes which were preps leading up to the Santa Anita Derby. He is a perfect 2-0 going two turns.
