Rhode Island enters play at Madison Square Garden with a 26-9 overall record and 9-7 versus A10 conference opponents. The Rams are coming off a 79-72 road victory against the Virginia Tech Hokies as 5 ½ point underdogs. The Rams hit on 46.7% of their shots and lost the rebounding battle by a 35-29 margin. Rhode Island allowed Virginia Tech to hit on 48.1% of their shots. But it was the Rams with the good defensive stand to close the game allowing the Hokies only 2 of 17 shooting from the floor to close the game. Senior forward Delroy James led the Rams with 18 points in victory.
Rhode Island began play in the NIT with the 76-64 victory against the Northwestern Wildcats from the Big Ten conference as a 6-point home favorite. The Rams hit on over 47% of their shot and limited the Wildcats to just 39.3%. In the NIT quarterfinals it was Rhode Island with the 85-83 home victory against the Nevada Wolf Pack from the WAC conference as an 8-½ point favorite. The team was fortunate to earn victory as they could only make 38.3% of their shots.
