Baylor began play in the NCAA Tournament with the 68-59 victory against Sam Houston St as a 10-½ point betting favorite. The Bears were successful on the defensive end limiting their first round opponent to just 33.8% shooting from the field. In the second round it was Baylor with the 76-68 win as a 4-½ point favorite against the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Bears were smoking hot from the field hitting on 51.9% from the field in victory.
Duke survived a good defensive effort by the Purdue Boilermakers in their 70-57 victory as an 8-½ point betting favorite. Duke was only up 24-23 but pulled away in the final 13 minutes with a 35-22 run to break a 35-35 tie to earn a ticket to the Elite 8. Duke made only 40% of their shots and 6 of 15 from three. Big man Brian Zoubek grabbed 14 rebounds in their win.
Duke began play in the NCAA Tournament by posting the 73-44 victory over 16th seeded Arkansas Pine Bluff. They then in the second run defeated a pretty good California team 68-53 as a 6-½ point betting favorite. Duke hit on 47.4% of their shots against the Golden Bears and allowed the regular season Pac 10 champions to just 39.6% shooting.
