Baylor began play in the NCAA Tournament with the 68-59 victory against Sam Houston St as a 10-½ point betting favorite. The Bears were successful on the defensive end limiting their first round opponent to just 33.8% shooting from the field. In the second round it was Baylor with the 76-68 win as a 4-½ point favorite against the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Bears were smoking hot from the field hitting on 51.9% from the field in victory.
Duke survived a good defensive effort by the Purdue Boilermakers in their 70-57 victory as an 8-½ point betting favorite. Duke was only up 24-23 but pulled away in the final 13 minutes with a 35-22 run to break a 35-35 tie to earn a ticket to the Elite 8. Duke made only 40% of their shots and 6 of 15 from three. The Blue Devils did make their free throws hitting on 20 of 24 from the charity stripe. Duke held the Boilermakers to just 37% shooting and only 4 of 15 from the field. Purdue only made 13 of 21 free throws. Duke destroyed Purdue on the boards with a 45-22 rebounding advantage. Junior forward Kyle Singler led the victors with 24 points. Big man Brian Zoubek grabbed 14 rebounds in their win.
Duke began play in the NCAA Tournament by posting the 73-44 victory over 16th seeded Arkansas Pine Bluff. They then in the second run defeated a pretty good California team 68-53 as a 6-½ point betting favorite. Duke hit on 47.4% of their shots against the Golden Bears and allowed the regular season Pac 10 champions to just 39.6% shooting.
On paper this looks like a possible high scoring game. Duke is 24th in all of college basketball as they average 77.4 points a game and Baylor is 28th with an average of 77.1. Baylor is the better shooting team hitting on 48.9% of their shots to Duke’s 44%.
