The St Mary’s Gaels from the WCC conference will face Big East power the Villanova Wildcats in an NCAA Tournament second round game on Saturday afternoon. Tip off time at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence Rhode Island is scheduled for 1:05PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by CBS.

The point spread was opened in the NCAA Tournament game by the LVSC college basketball odds makers and they made the Villanova Wildcats 5 point favorites with the over under lined at 150.

The bettors came in early with their money on the WCC conference, as the Villanova Wildcats are currently 4 ½ point favorites. The total has been bet upward early, as the over under is lined at 153 for the college basketball bettors to play into.

Money line gamblers on the side of the Villanova Wildcats will find –210 odds with the underdog St Mary’s Gaels paying +175 to win this game outright without taking the points on their side.

Villanova came out flat in their opening round NCAA tournament match up with Robert Morris. The Wildcats fell behind 28-22 at the half and rallied for a 73-70 victory over the Colonials as an 18-½ point betting favorite. Senior guard Scottie Reynolds was benched for the first four minutes of the game by the coaching staff for misbehavior. Reynolds had 20 points in 34 minutes but hit on only 2 of 15 from the field. The senior was clutch from the line as he converted on 15 of 16 from the charity stripe. Villanova will need to clean up its act as they committed 16 turnovers.

St Mary’s Gaels advanced in their first round game in the NCAA Tournament with an 80-71 upset victory over a good Richmond Spider team as a 2-point underdog. After a 36-36 halftime tie the Gaels took over the game in the second half by outscoring the Spiders 44-35. The Gaels used their size advantage under the glass to disrupt the Spiders shots under the basket. St Mary’s converted on 49% of their shots and 42% from the three-point line. Richmond had no answer for St Mary’s big man Omar Samhan who contributed with 29 points on 11 of 16 shooting and 12 boards. St Mary’s destroyed Richmond on the glass by a 39-16 margin. Samhan was in foul trouble and despite playing only 28 minutes he still was able to contribute mightily for the Gaels. St Mary’s shot better that these two schools on the season hitting on 48.8% of their shots to the Wildcats 46.2%.

Villanova will need to pressure the Gaels ball handlers making it difficult for them to hit Samhan down low. Villanova has more speed and we will see if the Wildcats can create turnovers entering the passing lane against St Mary’s. If Scottie Reynolds can draw fouls on Samhan it could be the difference in this game because the Wildcats could exploit the Gaels with the big man in foul trouble.
