But in the semifinal round it was the San Diego St Aztecs pulling out the 72-69 victory over New Mexico as a 2-½ point underdog. New Mexico was very leaky on defense in the Mountain Wes tournament as they allowed 54% shooting to Air Force and 51.9% to San Diego St.

The Montana Grizzlies qualified for the NCAA Tournament as winners of the Big Sky tournament. They enter this meeting with New Mexico winners of three straight games. They opened play in the Big Sky tournament semifinals with the 68-63 victory over Northern Colorado as a 2-point favorite. They then pulled off a huge second half comeback victory at Weber St in the finals. Montana pulled out the 66-65 victory as a 3 ½ point underdog overcoming a 20 point halftime deficit.
