The early money from the NFL betting public has come in on the favorite, as the Indianapolis Colts are currently a 5-½ point favorite. The total has seen early movement in the betting towards the over, as the over under is currently lined at 56.
NFL money line gamblers can make a play on the favored Indianapolis Colts at –210 with the underdog New Orleans Saints bringing back +180 to pull off the straight up victory in Super Bowl XLIV without the benefit of getting the points.
The Indianapolis Colts survived a major scare in the AFC Championship as the team rallied from a 17-6 second quarter deficit. But it was Peyton Manning’s precise passing that saw the AFC Champions outscore the New York Jets 24-0 in the final 32 minutes of the game to pull out a 30-17 victory.
Peyton Manning had a great AFC Championship as he passed for 26 of 39 for 377 yards three touchdowns and no interceptions against the best defense in the NFL. The Jets compiled 461 total yards in victory. Peyton Manning was the NFL league MVP and played like it in rallying the Colts. On the season the veteran signal caller hit on nearly 69% of his passes for 33 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. In the playoffs Manning has hit on 56 of 83 for 623 yards 5 touchdowns and no picks.
The Colts were able to gather 101 rushing yards in the AFC championship. Running back Joseph Addai posted his best game of the season rushing for 80 yards on 16 attempts for 5.0 yards a carry average. Addai had a down season with a yard per rush attempt average of just 3.8 yards. Rookie running back Donald Brown had just 78 carries on the season with just 3.6 yards per carry average.
Defensively the Colts allow just 18.2 points per game. The Colts have a very fast defense and allow just 9.5 yards per completed pass ranking 1st in the NFL. Their defense really stepped up against a good passing team this season against the Arizona Cardinals where they allowed just 10 points. The Colts defense has allowed just 20 points combined in two playoff games.
The New Orleans Saints squeaked out a 31-28 overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship. The team was able to win the turnover margin as the Vikings coughed the ball up 5 times to the Saints 1 turnover. The Saints were very fortunate to win this game as their defense allowed the Vikings 475 offensive yards. The Saints struggled on third down conversions as the team was just 3 of 12 against the Vikings. New Orleans committed 9 penalties for 88 yards, which included many late hits on the quarterback that resulted in personal foul penalties.
Drew Brees hit on just 54.8% of his passes in the NFC Championship. His 54.8% passing percentage was his worst all season. In the game Brees passed for 197 yards for three touchdowns and no interceptions. On the season the Saints signal caller hit on 70.6% of his passes with 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In the playoffs the veteran quarterback has thrown 6 touchdowns with no interceptions.
Running back Pierre Thomas contributed in the NFC Championship with 61 rushing yards on 14 carriers with a touchdown. Thomas had a great 2009 campaign with 6 rushing touchdowns and an impressive 5.4 yards a carry average. Reggie Bush did not contribute much in the running game against the good Vikings rush defense with just 8 yards on 7 carries. He did contribute in the passing game with 2 catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. An issue during Reggie Bush’s career is he cannot put back-to-back good games together. After a huge performance against the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Divisional round playoffs, Bush once again struggled the week after in his game against the Vikings. The Saints cannot count on 5 Colts turnovers in the Super Bowl so Reggie Bush will need a big game to win this game for the Saints.
On the defensive side of the ball the Saints allow an average of 21 points per game. The Saints survived the Vikings despite allowing the road team nearly 500 yards. The NFC Champions allow 240 passing yards per game ranking 26th in the NFL. The Saints defense make up for their poor stats by forcing turnovers. New Orleans in their two playoff games have a +6 turnover margin.
