The Temple Owls had a successful season finishing with a 9-3 record. They enter their bowl game off a 35-17 MAC conference loss at Ohio that cost the Owls a trip to the MAC conference championship. The Owls are an excellent running team rushing for 200 or more yards over their past 6 games. Freshman running back Bernard Pierce led the Owls on the ground with 5.8 yards per carry average. His backup is also a freshman as Matt Brown contributed with a 6.5 yards a carry average. Brown ran wild to close the season with a combined 328 yards rushing in the teams’ final two games. The Owls did not get much production from their quarterback position as Vaughn Charlton and Chester Steward combined for only a 46.7% completion percentage with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Defensively Temple allows 21.7 points per game. They own the top rushing defense in the MAC conference allowing just 108 yards per game and an impressive 3.2 yards per rush attempt. Temple has a notable victory this season winning at Navy 27-24. Temple head coach Al Golden is in his fourth season with the team. He is coaching in his first bowl game with the team.
