The San Diego Chargers are a hot team winners of 8 straight games and sitting with a two game lead with three to play in the AFC West division with a 10-3 record. The team is coming off an impressive 20-17 victory at Dallas last week with a total team effort from both sides of the ball. The team has greatly improved their play on defense allowing no more than 23 points during their 8 game winning streak. Starting quarterback Phillip Rivers has been very accurate passing for 8 touchdowns and 1 interception over his past 5 games with no less than 65.6% passing. On the ground the Chargers are still struggling as LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for a mere 50 yards on 21 carries. Tomlinson has rushed for no more than 3.2 yards a carry over his past three games. Tomlinson has had a game with no more than 4 yards a carry in his past 10 contests. It’s a good thing that Phillip Rivers and his receivers have played well because the Chargers running backs have not produced running the football. The Chargers have played much better defense this season allowing just 117 yards rushing and 207 through the air. The Cincinnati Bengals sit at 9-4 this season and two games ahead of Baltimore in the AFC North with three games remaining. The Bengals need to only win once or have the Ravens drop a game to clinch the AFC North as the team has beaten Baltimore twice this season. Pittsburgh cannot win the AFC North after losing to Cleveland last week. The Cincinnati passing attack has not been very potent since losing wide receiver Chris Henry to a season ending injury in week 9 against Baltimore. Carson Palmer has passed for only three touchdowns since Henry’s injury. Palmer is hitting on 60.8% of his passes with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Palmer had a season low 94 yards passing in the teams 30-10 loss to Minnesota last week. Running back Cedric Benson had a good game last week with 96 yards on 16 carries against a good run defense in Minnesota. With Benson healthy Larry Johnson has gotten just 5 carries over the past two games. Cincinnati has played good defense throughout the season allowing just 16.7 points per game. The Bengals passing defense will be tested on Sunday and Cincinnati allows just 209 yards passing per game. San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers will have the ball in the air on Sunday because Cincinnati can stop the run allowing just 86 yards per game and just 3.8 yards per rush attempt. The Bengals have not allowed more than 183 yards passing in their past 6 games. The added importance to this game is the race for the second seed in the AFC playoffs. The Chargers are 1 game ahead of Cincinnati with three to play and with a win on Sunday would clinch the #2 seed if they can hold off Denver to win the AFC West and with it will come a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
