Notre Dame enters this game with a 6-5 record on the year and coming off a 33-30 home loss to the Connecticut Huskies. Connecticut ran all over the Irish with 231 rushing yards. The program is under fire as head coach Charlie Weis’ job is in jeopardy off a disappointing season. Another distraction is a reported brawl involving Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen who is sporting a black eye. Jimmy Clausen is hitting well on the season hitting on 67% of his passes this season with 23 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He has been no worse than 64% accurate over his past 5 games. Junior running back Armando Allen did a good job rushing the football last week with 106 yards rushing in 24 attempts. Notre Dame has been very poor on defense this season allowing 24 points a game and 388 yards. Notre Dame will need to stop the Cardinal run attack and the Irish allows 160 yards on the ground and a high 4.6 yards a carry to their opponents. Stanford is 7-4 this season and coming off a disappointing 34-28 loss in the big game against Cal. The Golden Bears torched the Cardinal defense for 477 yards and 35 points. Stanford will be facing a good passing offense and the Cardinal ranks 7th in the Pac 10 against the pass allowing 257 yards through the air. The Irish will have their hands full against Cardinal running back Toby Gerhart who is averaging 5.4 yards a carry and rushed for over 1500 yards this season. Gerhart has been outstanding averaging over 6 yards a carry in his past three games combined against Oregon, USC and Cal. Freshman quarterback Andrew Luck must have lost a lot of sleep this week after throwing a game losing interception deep in Cal territory in the final minutes in their 6 point loss to the Golden Bears last week. In his first ever Big Game the freshman quarterback spit out the big hitting on just 10 of 30 for 157 yards no touchdowns and 1 interception.
Tony T’s Opinion: If this game makes my card I will be looking at taking the points. Charlie Weis seems to have come to grips with his imminent firing and I expect the Irish to be loose and to play well. At least Connecticut wasn’t the Fighting Irish main rival. Stanford blew the Big Game last week and it may lead to a led down in this one.
