The Green Bay Packers will travel in a short week to face the Detroit Lions in a Thanksgiving Day NFL pro football game on Thursday afternoon. Kick off time in Detroit is scheduled for 12:30PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by Fox. The LVSC college football odds makers have set the opening point spread in this game and the Green Bay Packers opened as a 10 point favorite with the over under coming in at 49. The early money from the NFL betting public has come in on the home underdog, as the Green Bay Packers are currently an 8-point favorite.
In their first meeting this season it was Green Bay shutting out the Lions 26-0 as a 14-point home favorite. Aaron Rogers passed for 328 yards on the bad Lions defense. Green Bay enters this Thanksgiving Day game with their NFC North rival off a 30-24 victory against the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers got up early on the 49ers taking a 23-3 lead at the half. Once again the Packers were very good against the run allowing just 69 yards on the ground to San Francisco and haven’t allowed 100 yards against their defense in 6 of their past 7 games. The Packers have played turnover free football in 4 of their past 5 games. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers had a good day on Sunday hitting on 32 of 45 passes for 344 yards two touchdowns and no interceptions in victory. The Packers allowed 2 sacks on Sunday and pass protection has been an issue this season as Aaron Rodgers has been sacked 43 times in 10 games. Packers running back Ryan Grant had his best game of the season rushing for 129 yards on 21 carries with at touchdown for a 6.1 yards per gain. On the season Grant has started to improve his running after a very slow start and is gaining 4.4 yards a carry on the season. Green Bay is 7th in the league in pass defense allowing just 191 yards passing per game. Opposing quarterbacks complete just 54% of their passes against Green Bay ranking the Packers defense 2nd in the league. Detroit is a miserable 2-8 this season. They are coming off a 38-37 win over lowly Cleveland last week. A huge concern is the Lions defense allowed an inept Cleveland Browns offense to put up 37 points on the board against their defense. Cleveland was able to rush for 131 yards and pass for 308 yards through the air. Despite the victory over an inept Cleveland Browns team one has to be extremely concerned about the Lions defense for this game. Opposing quarterbacks complete 70.3% on the Lions making Detroit 32nd in the league. A concern for the Lions is the health of rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford who suffered a left shoulder injury. If Stafford can’t give it a go it will be veteran back up Dante Culpepper getting the start. Culpepper has hit on 56% of his passes this season with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. The 11-year veteran last saw action way back in week 6. He did get the start against Pittsburgh in week 5 hitting on 23 of 37 for 282 yards a touchdown and an interception.
