The Cardinal has a shot at a Rose Bowl berth but they must win this final Pac 10 conference game and will need help. Senior running back Toby Gerhart rushed for 178 yards on USC last week on 29 carries. Freshman quarterback Andrew Luck is hitting on 58% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. With Stanford running all over USC, Luck only passed 22 times last week. When Luck has passed over 30 times the Cardinal have lost all three times. With Cal sporting a good running game the Cardinal will have to be good in stopping it and Stanford ranks 7th in the Pac 10 in rushing defense allowing 138 rushing yards and 4.5 yards per carry average. Cal is 7-3 this season and bowl eligible as they enter their rivalry game. The team is coming off a 24-16 win at home last week against Arizona. They limited Arizona to just 73 rushing yards and Cal has been good in that area of the game. The team has not allowed 100 yards on the ground in four weeks. Cal is the #2 rushing defense in the Pac 10 allowing just 103 yards per game and just 3.1 yards a carry. With Jahvid Best out with his concussion suffered in the Oregon St game it was sophomore backup running back Shane Vereen rushing for 159 yards on 30 carries last week. Vereen pulled off a 61 yard run in the closing minutes to help the Cal Bears seal their victory last week. Cal quarterback Kevin Riley hits on only 55% of his passes this season. When Riley is not accurate the team doesn’t win. Against USC Riley hit on 37% of his passes and against Oregon just 38% that resulted in terrible home losses.
