The Temple Owls are having one of their best seasons in recent years as they bring a 6-2 record into this home conference game. Temple is coming off an impressive 27-24 road victory at Navy as a 7 point underdog. Despite 3 turnovers the Owls were able to squeak out a win over a good Navy defense. Temple is a pretty good running team posting 274 rushing yards on 34 carries last week at Navy and 211 rushing yards the week prior at Toledo. Temple has won 6 straight games and is a perfect 4-0 in MAC play this season. The Temple Owls are very good against the run ranked number two in the MAC allowing just 113 yards rushing per game and only 3.16 yards per against average. They defended Navy’s run option very well last week, as the Midshipmen couldn’t gain over 4 yards a carry last week. Temple is averaging 26 points per game this season and is balanced with 162 rushing yards and 151 through the air per game. Junior quarterback Vaughn Charlton has not been very accurate hitting on only 50.8% of his passes with 9 touchdowns and 7 interceptions this season. Charlton is coming off a very poor day throwing the football at Navy with just 5 of 17 passing for 37 yards no touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Freshman running back Bernard Pierce has been a workhorse for the Owls as the ball carrier has rushed 164 times for 1,033 yards 11 touchdowns for an impressive 6.3 yards per carry average. Pretty good for a freshman back but he has been heavily used with 69 carries over his past two games and coming into this contest on only 4 days rest. Miami Ohio is a poor 1-8 this season and has struggled mightily for offense this season. The Redhawks average only 13.8 points per game. They are 10th in the MAC in rush defense allowing 181 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per rush attempt. Miami Ohio is coming off their first win of the season beating Toledo 31-24 on Saturday. Prior to that Miami Ohio fought Northern Illinois all the way too the wire losing 27-22 as a 10-point home favorite. They have posted 344 passing yards on Northern Illinois and 344 last week to Toledo. Miami Ohio is a passing team and Temple is 6th in the MAC defending the pass allowing 197 yards passing per game with 6.5 yards per attempt against average through the air. Miami Ohio is a young team with just 11 seniors. Freshman starting quarterback Zac Dysert has improved his play as the season has gone on and is now hitting on 61% of his passes with 8 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the season. Miami Ohio cannot run a lick with just 2.5 yards per rush attempt average this season, which is 116th in the nation.
Tony T’s Opinion: I may look at the underdog in this game and take the points if this makes my card. This young Miami Ohio team has improved the past two weeks. Temple has played a very easy schedule during this 6 game winning streak.
