The teams met last season with the Alabama Crimson Tide earning a 27-21 win at LSU. Both teams moved the ball up and down the field as the Crimson Tide put up 353 yards to the LSU Tigers 382. But LSU committed 4 turnovers in their 2008 home loss. The Alabama Crimson Tide are a perfect 8-0 this season and coming off a 12-10 victory against Tennessee last time out. Alabama heads into this showdown with LSU off a bye week. Alabama’s stout running game could only generate 136 yards on 30 carries against the Volunteers. Sophomore running back Mark Ingram was able to generate yards on Tennessee two weeks ago with 99 yards on 18 carries for 5.5 yards per rush average. On the season the Crimson Tide running back has been able to rush for a 6.6 yards per carry average on the season. The only team to contain Ingram this season was Arkansas who held the talented running back to just 50 yards on 17 carries for a 2.9 yards per carry average and his lowest average of the season. Junior starting quarterback Greg McElroy despite a very stout running game is hitting on just 59% of his passes with just 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. McElroy has had problems with his accuracy with three games hitting on 50% accuracy or worse in games against good defenses such as Virginia Tech, Mississippi and South Carolina. Alabama is number two in the SEC in total defense allowing just 242 yards per game and just a 3.9 yards per carry average. The LSU Tigers are 7-1 this season and coming off an easy win home against in state rival Tulane 42-0. The lone LSU loss on the season was a 13-3 result at home in prime time to Florida. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson is hitting on 63% of his passes with only 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on the season. Jefferson has failed to throw a touchdown pass in 3 of LSU’s 5 games against SEC opponents. Jefferson does not hit well on deep throws and the numbers back it. Tigers lead running back Charles Scott is averaging 4.5 yards per carry this season. That’s almost a full yard below his yards per carry average from a year ago. Scott has been inconsistent this season running the football. Scott rushed for 18 touchdowns last year and only 4 this season. On defense LSU allows 293 yards per game and a 4.4 yards per carry average ranking 4th in the SEC. The LSU Tigers rushing defense will be tested trying to contain Mark Ingram and the Alabama’s Wildcat defense. LSU is third in the SEC allowing 3.2 yards per rush against their defense. Florida rushed the football 48 times for 193 yards on the Tigers defense. The Gators 13 points against the LSU defense was the lowest point total of the season for Florida’s offense.
