In last years meeting the South Carolina Gamecocks won 27-6. The Gamecocks allowed only 207 offensive yards to the Volunteers and were aided by 3 Tennessee turnovers. The South Carolina Gamecocks enter this game off a close 14-10 victory against Vanderbilt to go to 6-2 on the year. South Carolina starting quarterback Stephen Garcia hit on 22 of 33 for 312 yards two touchdowns and no interceptions in victory. The issue offensively last week for South Carolina has been their running game that only produced 119 yards on 37 rushing attempts for just a 3.2 yards per carry average. Defensively South Carolina is 4th in the SEC giving up just 288 yards per game and 4.6 yards per play average. Tennessee is 3-4 on the year and coming off a hard fought 12-10 loss at Alabama a week ago. The Volunteers had a field goal blocked late in defeat. It was an outstanding defensive performance by Tennessee as they allowed just 136 rushing yards and 120 through the air against the Crimson Tide. Tennessee senior quarterback Jonathan Crompton is hitting on 57% of his passes on the season with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Against the two good defensive teams on their schedule Crompton has passed for just 1 touchdown. The Volunteers scored a combined 23 points against Alabama and Tennessee. On the ground Montario Hardesty has rushed 143 times for 720 yards 6 touchdowns and a 5.0 yards per carry average. Tennessee has had problems on third downs this season converting just 38% of the time and ranking 8th in the SEC.
Tony T’s Opinion: South Carolina had a good defensive performance last week. Vanderbilt got their touchdown on a kick off return so their defense did not give up a TD to Vanderbilt’s offense. If this game makes may card I will be on the underdog. Tennessee could only muster 10 points against Alabama and 13 to Florida. South Carolina’s defense though not at the level of those two teams is still very, very good.
