The California Golden Bears will hit the road in Pac 10 conference play when they face the Arizona St Sun Devils in a college football game on Saturday afternoon. Kick off time at Arizona St is scheduled for 3:30PM Eastern Time with regional television coverage provided by ABC. Arizona St Sun Devils were thoroughly dominated by the Stanford Cardinal last week losing 33-14. Arizona St could not sustain drives offensively as they were only 3 of 11 on third downs and 0 of 2 on fourth downs. Senior quarterback Danny Sullivan continues to struggle with accuracy. Despite two touchdown passes Sullivan could only complete 52% of his passes last week. On the season Sullivan has passed for only 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on the season. Despite the poor defensive performance last week the Arizona St Sun Devils are still the #1 defense in the Pac 10 allowing just 280 yards per game. California comes into Tempe with two straight wins. They pounded hapless Washington St last week 49-17 last week but allowed 385 passing yards to a freshman quarterback. Junior Golden Bear running back Jahvid Best has rushed 114 times this season for 775 yards for a 6.8 yards per carry average. He had a long run last week for 61 yards and pulled off a 93 yard run two weeks ago at UCLA. California starting quarterback Kevin Riley has been accurate against the weak teams but very poor against the 2 good defenses on their schedule. Riley could only complete 38% of his passes to Oregon and 37% against USC. Cal was outscored 72-6 against USC and Oregon combined.
Tony T’s Opinion: Should this game make my card I may lean to an under in this game. Danny Sullivan has been very inconsistent this season and there have been some calls at Arizona St to replace him. Arizona St is facing an inaccurate quarterback in Kevin Riley. They will focus their attention on stopping Jahvid Best and force Kevin Riley to beat them. This is exactly what Oregon and USC did to Cal and Arizona St has the defense to execute this game plan. I don’t believe Riley can cover a 6-point road spread at Arizona St.
