The USC Trojans will travel north in a key Pac 10 conference game when they play the Oregon Ducks in a college football game on Saturday night. Kick off time in Oregon is set for 8PM Eastern Time with regional television coverage provided by ABC. USC survived another difficult battle as they beat Oregon St 42-36 last week. The Trojans defense once again gave up tons of yardage as Oregon St gained 452 total yards on Pete Carroll’s defense and posted a 36 on the scoreboard. Oregon St’s 153 rushing yardage was the most the USC Trojans gave up all season. USC faced two straight accurate quarterbacks this season and have allowed 63 points over their past two games. Oregon St was able to move the ball on the ground based on the accuracy of Sean Canfield as the Trojans linebackers could not stack the line last week. USC freshman quarterback Matt Barkley has hit over 60% of his passes over the past two games with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The Trojans got great production on the ground from senior running back Allen Bradford who gained 147 yards last week on 15 carries with two touchdowns. Fifteen carries was the most of the season for Bradford this season. The question in this game is junior quarterback Jeremiah Masoli accurate enough throwing the football in order for his running ability to be effective. In big time college football running style quarterbacks better complete passes or they become ineffective against the upper echelon teams. Masoli has hit on 60% of his passes this season with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. In Masoli’s two games against good defensive teams on their schedule Masoli completed just 25% of his passes and 51% against Boise St. Masoli has rushed 59 times for 272 yards on the season for a 4.6 yards per carry average. LaMichael James the freshman running back has rushed for 735 yards on 107 carries for 6.9 yards per carry average. James had only 2 carries in the Boise St game. Oregon has won 6 straight and their defense has been good allowing just 38 points in four Pac 10 conference games this season.
Tony T’s Opinion: If this game makes my card I would lean to the USC side. As I wrote up in last weeks Oregon St and USC preview I felt Oregon St was a live dog with a great running game and an accurate quarterback. Jeremiah Masoli has not been accurate against the good defenses this season so I expect the Trojans to stack the line much like they did against the California Bears. USC will force Masoli to beat him through the air but he is not accurate enough to get the job done.
