Oakland and San Diego met to open the season at Oakland with the San Diego Chargers winning 24-20. In victory the Chargers running game was stalled with just 72 yards on 23 carries. Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell hit on 14 of 32 for 218 yards, which was his best performance to date on the season. The Chargers dominated a bad Kansas Chiefs secondary in their 37-7 route. Phillip Rivers hit on 18 of 30 for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns in victory. Phillip Rivers has played mistake free football with no interceptions in his past 4 games. Chargers running back Ladainian Tomlinson is coming off a 71 yard rushing performance on 23 carries. Tomlinson has not been good inside the 5-yard line as he failed on several attempts to cross the plane of the end zone in short yardage situations. The much-maligned Chargers defense allowed just 121 rushing yards and 82 passing yards to Kansas Chiefs last week. It was the Chargers best performance of the season on defense. The Oakland Raiders are coming off a pathetic 38-0 loss last week to the New York Jets. The Raiders allowed the Jets to rush for 316 yards last week in defeat. Starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell was benched after being ineffective last week and was relieved by backup Bruce Gradkowski. The third year quarterback Russell has hit on just 46% of his passes with 2 touchdowns and 8 interceptions on the season. Raiders head coach Tom Cable announced that Russell would be his starter in this game. Russell has thrown only 1 touchdown pass in his past 6 games. Raiders running back Justin Fargas ran hard last week against the Jets with 67 yards on 8 carries. The Raiders running game has not produced enough, as all three of the Raiders running backs are averaging less than 3.8 yards per carry this season. In Oakland’s past two road games at the New York Giants and Houston Texans they were outscored by a combined score of 73-13.

Tony T’s Opinion: If this game makes my card I will be on only 1 side and that’s the San Diego Chargers laying the heavy points. After dropping their last home game two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos the Chargers will put on a performance like last week in front of the home folks. The Raiders cannot match scores with the Chargers and Phillip Rivers has now gotten on target with his receivers after a slow start.
