The North Carolina Tar Heels will look to bounce back when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies in an ACC conference college football game in prime time on Tuesday night. Kick off time in Virginia Tech is scheduled for 7:45PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by ESPN. The LVSC college football odds makers have set the opening point spread in this game and the Virginia Tech Hokies opened as a 13-½ point favorite. The early money from the college football betting public has been home favorite money, as the Virginia Tech Hokies are currently a 16-½ point favorite. College football money line gamblers can make a play on the favored Virginia Tech Hokies at –1000 with the road underdog North Carolina Tar Heels returning +700 to pull off the upset victory with no need of getting the points.
North Carolina has been competitive the past two meetings with Virginia Tech winning by a field goal last season and the Hokies earning a 17-10 win at home in 2007. North Carolina is 4-3 on the season after falling last week to Florida St 30-27. The Tar Heels passing defense was torched last week for 395 yards by Seminoles starting quarterback Christian Ponder. North Carolina put up 27 points against a bad Florida St defense last week but has struggled offensively throughout much of the season. The issue with the Tar Heels has been the play of junior quarterback T.J. Yates. Yates is hitting on 59% of his passes for only 7 passing touchdowns in 7 games played with 8 interceptions. The problem with T.J. Yates is the fact he has such a weak passing arm and cannot go vertical with the North Carolina offense. It is very easy for opposing secondaries to defend North Carolina because of Yates limited range. With a weak armed quarterback opposing linebackers can play closer to the line of scrimmage and the Tar Heel running game is only producing 3.6 yards per carry average. It will be interesting to see how long North Carolina head coach Butch Davis will go with T.J. Yates because this quarterback will not deliver against the upper echelon teams on their schedule. Virginia Tech is 5-2 on the season after falling to Georgia Tech 28-23 a week ago on the road. Virginia Tech had problems defending the option of the Yellow Jackets as Georgia Tech rushed for 309 yards on the Hokies. North Carolina’s offense is a bit different with a weak armed quarterback with no speed. North Carolina will have trouble scoring but the question is can Virginia Tech get points on the #1 defense in the ACC in North Carolina. Hokies running back Ryan Williams has rushed for 834 yards on 140 carries for 6.0 yards per carry average. Hokies starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been accurate through the air hitting on 70% or better in his past three games. Virginia Tech is 4-0 at home this season with a 48-14 victory against Boston College and a 31-7 win against Miami.
Tony T’s Opinion: I may hesitate to lay such a big number against the good defense of North Carolina but I do lean to a low scoring game.
