Rutgers comes into this meeting after a bye week and prior to that suffered a 24-17 loss at home in a nationally televised game against the Pittsburgh Panthers. Rutgers rushing game was halted by Pittsburgh as the Scarlet Knights could only muster 38 yards on 20 carries. Rutgers two losses this season have been at home to the very good defenses of Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Rutgers has a win on the road at Maryland beating the Terrapins 34-13 with a strong rushing performance. Rutgers freshman quarterback Tom Savage has hit on 57% of his passes this year with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception on the season. The 248 yards he passed on the Pittsburgh Panthers was his best effort of the season. Junior running back Joe Martinek had a good rushing game this season at Maryland running for 147 yards on 19 carries. Martinek struggled against the solid rushing defenses of the Cincinnati Bearcats and Pittsburgh Panthers. Army is 3-4 this season and is coming off a 27-13 loss at Temple. Army is a running team who rushes the football nearly 80% of the time. The team averages 4.2 yards per rushing attempt this season. They own a victory this season at home to offensively challenged Vanderbilt 16-13. But Rutgers is a tough team to run on as the Scarlet Knights allow just 91 yards per game on the ground and are second in the Big East Conference. Opposing teams have only averaged 2.95 yards per rushing attempt against the Scarlet Knights defense. This game does not match up well for Army as they rely on a run game but lack efficiency through the air.
Tony T’s Opinion: I cannot look at the Army side in this game as the Rutgers defense has played the run well. Army has passed more than 7 times just once this season. If this game makes my card I will be looking to play on the road team the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Running back Joe Martinek ran the ball very well at Maryland and he could repeat that performance. Rutgers has a balanced attack that I believe would produce enough points for a cover in this game. Bad weather conditions would most likely take me off this game.
