Head coach Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks will visit the North Carolina Wolfpack to open the 2009 college football regular season on Thursday night. Kickoff time is set for 7PM Eastern Time with national television coverage provided by ESPN. The LVSC college football odds makers have set the opening line for the sports betting public and the home team North Carolina St have opened as 3 ½ point favorites with the over under coming in at 46. The early money has come in from sports bettors on the favorite as the North Carolina Wolfpack are currently a 4 ½ point favorite. The total is still lined at 46 for the sports betting public. College Football money line bettors will find the North Carolina Wolfpack at –160 with the underdog South Carolina Gamecocks bringing back +140 to win straight up without the point spread factoring in the outcome of the game. Many sports bettors made good money backing the Wolfpack as they successfully covered the point spread in their last 8 regular season games.
The teams met last season as well in the opener with South Carolina routing NC State 34-0. The Gamecocks held the Wolfpack to just 49 yards passing. Interesting to note South Caroline earned a 34-0 victory despite throwing 4 interceptions. With 38 turnovers last season they tied for last in the nation a year ago. Stephen Garcia is slated to start for the Gamecocks and the sophomore completed just 53.3% of his passes last year with six touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Last year the Gamecocks running game were only able to muster a 2.9 yards per carry average and improvement is needed. The Gamecock’s defense unraveled late last season allowing 87 points in their last 2 regular season games. After a 2-6 start the Wolfpack finished the regular season with 4 straight wins and earned a berth in the Papa Johns Bowl. Quarterback Russell Wilson completed 54.5% of his passes a year ago for just under 2000 yards with 17 touchdowns and only 1 interception. Russell is also a threat to run as the quarterback rushed for 388 net yards last season. The team returns its two top pass catching receivers from a year ago. Russell Wilson has bad memories about their meeting a year ago as he suffered a grade 3 concussion against South Carolina that knocked him out of the game.
