The Del Mar Handicap will be run on Sunday August 30th with a post time at 8:32PM Eastern Time with television coverage by TVG. It will be run at a 1 3/8th’s of a mile and is scheduled for the turf. The Del Mar Handicap is a Grade 2 stakes for three year olds and up with the winner guaranteed a spot in the 2009 Breeders Cup Turf. The Del Mar Handicap has been selected as a win and you’re in race for this years Breeders Cup Turf at Santa Anita. Ten horses are scheduled to run with the #8 Spring House as the 5-2 morning line favorite.

Black Astor will be ridden by Joe Talamo and is coming off a 1st place finish in the Grade 2 Sunset at Hollywood Park. He has a win over the Del Mar Turf course in two tries. He has been lightly raced in 2009 as is competing for the third time this year after racing 11 times in 2008. This will be Black Astor’s second race back from a layoff and has a good work on the 23rd leading up to this race. Garrett Gomez is aboard Artiste Royal and this horse in his past six Grade 1 races has finished no worse than 2 lengths off the eventual winner. Gomez raced him to victory in the San Marco at Santa Anita this past January.

With David Flores up on Sunday Porfido has had the same rider aboard for his past 10 races and has been in the money in 8 of 10 races. The 7 year old is making his 4th start this season and has trained well for this race. This horse can handle distance and must be part of your exotics.

Racketeer will be ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr and is coming off a nice effort last out on the turf going 1 1/16th back on August 26th at Del Mar. Trainer Barry Abrams is bringing him back to the races within 4 days. Racketeer has ran some of his best races on the turf and will be running late to get a piece of the exotics.

The top 3 best Beyer numbers last time out heading into the Del Mar Handicap are #10 Black Astor with a 99, #9 Artiste Royal and #1 Unusual Suspect with both earning a 97 Beyer. Unusual Suspect’s number was earned on the dirt and his recent turf numbers aren’t good enough to bet him in this race.
