The 2008 Carolina Panthers finished with a regular season record of 12-4 and hosted a divisional round playoff game. The Carolina Panthers were ousted by the Arizona Cardinals 33-13 in the playoffs with their only home defeat of the season. The 2008 season was a 5 game improvement over the Panthers injury decimated 2007 season when the team was 7-9. Sports betting oddsmakers have set the 2009 Carolina Panthers regular season win projected total NFL betting line at 8 1/2 wins.

Schedule:
The Carolina Panthers play in the NFC South and that means 2 games against the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The NFC South must play the AFC East this season so the Panthers will hit the road against the New York Jets and New England Patriots and will host the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. The NFC South must play the NFC East this season so the Panthers will host the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins while traveling to the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. As the first place finisher in the NFC South the Panthers must play the two other first place NFC teams and the Panthers will hit the highway against the Arizona Cardinals and will play home to the Minnesota Vikings.
Offense:
The Carolina Panthers strength is their running game with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart combining for over 2000 yards combined rushing in 2008. Veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme returns as starter and played in all 16 games in 2008 after being injured for most of the 2007 season. Delhomme’s issues has been his decision making as he is prone to making mistakes. Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad lead the receiving corps and the team is hoping that Dwayne Jarrett can step up in 2009.

Defense:
The Carolina Panthers defense started strong but finished weakly as the unit gave up 30 or more points in five of their last seven games. The Panthers are young on their defensive line with four of the seven on the roster being rookies. The Panthers lost huge tackle Maake Kemoeatu to a season ending injury and his six foot five inch three hundred and forty-five pound frame required a double team. The Panthers linebackers are solid unit led by Jon Beason. The Panthers lost corner back Ken Lucas in free agency and are hoping that 2006 2nd round pick Richard Marshall is ready to step into the starting role. Sherrod Martin was drafted in the second round to add depth to the unit.
And now to my Selection:
The Carolina Panthers will go as far as their defense takes them. The team is solid on offense with a stout running game and excellent offensive line. The question mark for the team is their young defensive line. Should the line fail to generate a pass rush it will weaken the teams strong linebackers and secondary coverage. The Panthers drew a very difficult schedule with only the Buffalo Bills sporting a record under .500 in 2008. But the odds on the Panthers have been adjusted to the schedule. The Panthers are good enough to get to 9 wins in 2009 and that will get you the money. Bet the Panthers over 8 ½.
Selection: Play the Carolina Panthers over 8 ½ wins for the 2009 NFL Season.
