I will bet on three horses to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. I like to spread out my money in the big races, as the payouts are often good in these races that create large betting pools.
Play 1 unit to win on #1 Big Drama., #7 Papa Clem and the #9 Pioneer of the Nile
Pioneer of the Nile in my opinion should be the favorite to win this race. Since moving over to the Bob Baffert barn with Garret Gomez up this horse has 4 wins and a second place finish racing in three Grade 1 races and two Grade 2’s. Baffert has told everyone who was willing to listen that his colt is improving and looking very good since his Kentucky Derby second place finish. Bob Baffert was on the Roger Stein Radio Show last weekend and told the audience that his horse will improve off his effort at the Kentucky Derby based on his recent works. When Bob Baffert is extremely confident about his horse you play him because Baffert doesn’t trick the betting public. Papa Clem has the stalking racing style that fits this race perfectly. Papa Clem was just a nose away from second place money in the slop of the Kentucky Derby. Big Drama has an impressive racing line with 5 wins and a second in his past 6 races. Was a disqualified second in the Swale and has the early speed to contend and could make a serious threat here to pull off the wire-to-wire upset. His 108 Beyer on a fast track ties with the filly Rachel Alexandra as the best Beyer number from any horse from this field.
Our Exacta Box will be #7 with #9 with #1 and #13 Rachel Alexandra
The super filly in this race put up a 108 Beyer in the Kentucky Oaks. Jockey Calvin Borel makes the switch off the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird to ride the favorite. Post 13 may be difficult for her as she competes against the boys for the first time. She will be tested early in this race as there is a bit of speed up front and she will be used early to contend for the lead. With Big Drama in this race the early fractions will be fast and she may be a victim in deep stretch of an extremely fast pace up front.
Our Trifecta Box will be #7 with #9 with #1 with #13 with #3 Musket Man.
Musket Man finished third in the Kentucky Derby and has finished in the money in all of his races in his career. He does not have enough early kick to win this race but will be a live horse in the Belmont Stakes. This horse will grab a piece of the exotics.
Our Superfecta Box will be #7 with #9 with #1 with #13 with #3 with #6 Terrain.
Terrain has finished fourth or better in all three Grade 1 races in his career. Terrain is another horse to fear in the Belmont. His late closing kick will pass the tiring horses and he could pick up 4th place money and must be in your superfecta ticket.
I have excluded the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird from any of my selections. The 2009 Kentucky Derby produced a fluke winner based on an extreme track bias on the inside and an off main track. Mine That Bird does not have the early speed to contend in The Preakness as it favors a stalking style based on the shorter distance and tighter turns.
